How much protein powder do I need at 190 pounds for lean muscle?

I have a protein powder that has 30g per serving and I am looking to get lean body muscle. I weigh 190 pounds.

Should I take 2 servings on workout days and 1 serving on non-workout days?

Minimum 1 g/lb of bodyweight overall protein intake. Use the powder when you want quick and easy protein meals(post workout, breakfast maybe)

It depends on your total intake for the day.

Whey is a convenience when whole food is hard to get down.

You would be fine only taking 70g/protein per day. Every licensed dietician and doctor I've talked to has said that 1g/1lb is way too much, and studies have shown health problems can result.

As a weightlifter, you're going to need more calories, which means more protein, but you don't want to overdo it. Why put your body at risk? Here is a good article explaining about how much you need and what too much protein can do to your body.

In all fairness, I rather be healthy and running around at 50 then having a hard time pissing or living off a dialisis machine.

Not that I belive 70 g is enough, just stating that this macho attitude of well I 'bodybuild' doesn't mean you should do whatever it takes to get huge.. In the long run, I still want to be in good shape when I'm older. I know one bodybuilder who was in magazines and has a fan page dedicated to him from the 80's who has back problems and has to sleep at night with a oxygen mask on.

    No thanks.

Interesting. I've always heard that 1-1.5g/lb were too much, but if it's working for some people then cool with me. If anything comes up though, I wouldn't hesitate to cut back the protein intake. Lots of people have told me they've gotten big by eating plenty of carbs and moderate protein intake. I've just read so many articles, and heard so many doctors say that too much protein is no good. As long as it's safe, go for it.

Most doctors are hypocrites. Be safe but if I listened to a doctor i'd never squat over 200 pounds because i'd bruise my bones or do X damage or some lame ****.

1 to 1.5 grams of protein a day won't kill you. Everyone around you though I dunno... you'll be pretty gassy lol.

70 gram is what they recommend for the average person, thouhg they also say 1.5g per lb is optimal for elite athletes though there is no evidence to support more then 1.5g per lb would be benificial.

Why does everyone forget that the timing is more important than the amount. You can do just fine eating 1g/lb of bw as long as your servings are divided fairly evenly in terms of quantity and timing. The idea is to maintain a positive nitrogen balance and a steady stream of amino acids for muscle repair and growth.

20-25g per serving 7 times per day is plenty for most people.
25-30g per serving 7 times a day will do for a fairly big guy
30-40g per serving 7 times a day if you're trying to add muscle and you're already big.

You can adjust the serving size if you eat more or less meals per day, but I try never to exceed 50g of protein in one sitting.

1 gram of protein for your current lean mass is PLENTY.

I don't think I ever get 1g per lb of body weight. I weigh around 180, I think on average I take in 100g a day, maybe less. Not saying I couldn't use more, but I seem to be doing fine with what I take in now. Maybe I'll notice some big changes if I take in more.. I'll try and see what happens!

At 100 grams of protein a day, what does your diet look like? I am honestly curious.

That whole article is full of ****.

I actually was on the ketogenic diet this summer. I lost 20lb. NO MUSCLE was lost. It's known to be real good at maintaning muscle. And I was never dehydrated.

That article is an indirect argument against bodybuilding. If it's not, then I'd like to see SOMEONE gain a lot of muscle eating only 70g of protein a day.
