LOL at this thread. That is the opposite of what bodybuilding is all about. However takes some hgh and your waist will thicken up nicely as long as you mix in 7000 calories.

It's a concept a lot of people struggle to understand. Genetics play a big role. Some will squat and deadlift heavy, see little change in waist size and preach to anyone who'll listen that those lifts don't thicken the waist. Obliques, abs, and erectors. They're muscles. Like every other muscle group, their growth potential and rate of growth will vary for each person.

To the OP, be careful what you wish for.

Maybe. It depends on the individual. Someone like Spirit could do them forever and his waist would probably still hover around 30". Training methods and body fat obviously play a role, but the biggest factor is genetics IMO.

I started with a 34" waist as a beanpole. Now it's 40". Some of that's body fat, but along with the glutes exploding to J-Lo proportions, squats and deadlifts thickened my waist (namely obliques). That's genetics. Others can train exactly the same way and hardly see a change in waist size. It's like some guys can bench for years and still have a ****ty chest and meanwhile there are a select few with great chest genetics who completely own them on a program of pushups. Different growth potential, different rates of growth.

My weight has fluctuated from 150lbs to 220lbs over the past 2-3 years, and my waist has stayed between 30-33". Genetic.

Different growth potential, different rates of growth.
I agree with this statement. I don't understand why he would even make this thread. Genetics gave him broad shoulders, low lats and a small waist. Whats wrong with that? If he wants to have a "big" waist just eat.

I do agree that I will probably always have a small waist because of my small bone structure. Other folks that may have started out lightweight probably underate as a youngster or probably weren't finshed growing (the typical bodybuilding.com pic @ 12 - 16 yrs old).

two tell tell signs you have potential to put on a lot of weight are wrist size, ribcage and hip/waist.

You can make them grow but genetics will ultimately determine to what degree and how fast.

What I can't understand is why someone would want to consciously make their waist bigger when a V-taper is so important in bodybuilding as Spirit said. I mean ****, I didn't ask for a 40" waist! Haha. When I started heavy deadlifting and squatting my obliques and glutes exploded. That's genetics. Now if I wanted to be a competitive BBer I'd hate it, but since my main goal is getting big and lifting heavy weight, it doesn't bother me.

yep now if he asked will trying to thicken my waist help me lift heavier... this might have turned out differently. Trust me young man if you want to "balance" out your "HUGE" upper body. Hit those legs. unless you are in a wheelchair in that case my bad.

different goals I know Dom... maybe if I had the frame and gusto I'd go for it. I'll leave that to spytech

x2. A small waist and wide back is the ideal physique.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.
