    Ancient Spartan Training

Okay guys, first off, i did use the search button but i couldnt find what i was looking for. when i searched for 'spartan training' al that came up was the workouts used to get the actors buff for the movie. to be honest, im not interested in that workout.

im more interested in the old training that the true spartans did, back in Ancient Greece. Does anybody have links or any knowledge of the training true spartans done when preparing for battle.

reps will be given for good answers...

i know it has evolved and it is good training has evolved. but as i heard on a movie (forget which one, think it was Hitch) "You can't really know where your going until you know where you have been". If that makes sense. So if i study and learn how they trained in ancient times, and compare it to now, adapt training styles from many eras, so i can keep evolving.

My goals at the moment is just stay conditioned as its season in AFL (australian rules football which i play) and come the end of the season, bulk up and gain strength.

Your right, i assume they didnt have their workouts wrote out on paper saying which exercises, sets, reps, rest periods etc. im sure they went of pure instinct. i guess they used whatever they could back in the time.

I found a couple videos on youtube to help me, as i remember watching a show called Human Weapon, where it shows many martial arts styles. and pankration was a martial arts used by the spartans. but the interesting part of the show was when they showed the conditioning and training they did. they trained by throwing rocks, benchpressing each other, deadlifting pots, running with someone on their back etc.

pretty much like i said above, i find ancient training interesting, as they didnt have the equipment nowdays, but yet was able to sculpt, condition, get stronger in their body. but it isnt like id go full ancient in my training, just adapt some styles, exercises etc etc

edit: Here is the youtube video

realised i dont know how to embed it

so i guess no one here is interested in how people trained back in ancient times. alot of them were more muscular, more conditioned, stronger, leaner than the population of the world today. and today we seem to know more. well they must of knew some things, nutrition, training. they didnt have all these fancy machines, or fancy programs, or fancy supplements, they just had balls-to-wall training

I also believe that it is too the past we must look to envision a new future.

I think if you want to follow something that is structured to the
Ancient ideal for BB would be best to follow old school BB like The Classic Proportions, health and beauty of Grimek and Reeves.

But spartan training is more military training as
Spartan was extremely war like so I don't think image muscle image was that important

Most ancient warriors were near-vegetarian and needed lots of energy not so much mass.

Too much protein takes away endurance and over a period of time is believed by some to be toxic (look into TCM)

The ancient Greek culture was the first that we know of to celebrate the muscular male physique.
    http://search.conduit.com/Results.as...ctid=CT1396957

Greek artists were fond of depicting leonine athletes locked in the heat of athletic competition in paintings, sculptures and friezes, not to mention equally buff gods doing whatever it is gods do.

These ideas where based on health and beauty not size

I get where you are coming from man, i did the same thing. Best i can come up with is that they used a lot of bodyweight training. It really helps if you try not to think of bodyweight training the way your old football coach used it or the modern age high rep bull**** so popular know with all these new "programs". we all know that strength comes from high intensity low rep work. There is a way to use you bodyweight to get just that. you can find everything you need in the book "Convict Conditioning, by: Paul Wade". It goes threw a complete progression from very simple exercises like wall pushups to the most advanced form of perfect one arm pushups. There are 6 main movements that it talks about, "pushups, squats, pullups, leg raises, handstand pushups and bridges". It is a bit of a high school level read but that does not take away from the overall purpose of the book at all. It is laid out very clearly and to the point. I think you will get a lot out of it even if just to add to your current program. hope this helps. and if you do find any literature on the ancient spartan programs let me know.

Dynamic Muscle Building - Steve Reeves' Other Book on Classic Physique Building!

    SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2010

Most people who are interested in classic physique building know Steve Reeves and might know about his book "Building the Classic Physique: The Natural Way." But perhaps fewer people know that Steve authored another book called "Dynamic Muscle Building."

This is a really good book that collects together many of the articles that Steve wrote in the Golden Age for some of Joe Weider's magazines. The first few chapters start off by providing routines for beginners, intermediates, and advanced trainers. These chapters are followed by chapters on specialized training (for different parts of the body). The remaining chapters reprint articles and interviews that Steve did. One of these articles is "How I Gained 19 Pounds in Two Weeks" - which is a true story that illustrates the power of muscle memory when it comes to regaining lost muscle.

The book is available through the Steve Reeves International Society (see our links) and probably through the regular channels (Amazon.com, etc). The book was actually published after Steve passed away and so John Little and George Helmer are listed as co-authors. So there may be some slight additions here and there that come from John or George and not from Steve. But when I compare the book to the original writings that Steve did in the Golden Age (from which this book is assembled), I can say that any such additions are very minor.

So, if you have the change, pick up the book! It is a must for any CPB'er!

    - CPB

P.S. If you would like a free, 1 year subscription to Classic Physique Builder zine (CPBzine) - a pdf "zine (do-it-yourself magazine) that is patterned after the mags of the Golden Age of Bodybuilding (the 1940s and 50s) - just email your name, the name of your city, state, and country (not your actual street address) to cpbzine@gmail.com. That's it! Any info you send us is strictly confidential. You won't get on any lists or receive any spam (even from us)!

If you take any class or even read up on the greeks/spartans/ mediterranean cultures you will find out they were all very violent and constantly engaged in war. At very young ages the males were taken into the military, so the fact that life for these bad ass dudes revolved around intense combat is why they were so fit. Don't believe me? Take a class on it and you'll find out thats why. People now a days do things spartans would have never done like browse the web, watch t.v., DRIVE, because they didnt have these things available so they were constatnly active unlike many sedentary people now a days...So basically get off your ass, take on the mentality to never be satisfied and give it 150%. Motivational not personal shot there.

Everything they ate was natural and what humans were meant to eat. Not saturated fat, artificial sugars and such, the human body wasn't made for that.

Saturated fat is still good for hormone production and other biological functions -- just as it was centuries ago when spartans were eating lamb, beef, and other sources of it. Or even 5 years ago when this thread was made.

I assume they trained all day, everyday. Not 3 x 45 minute sessions a week.
I seriously doubt anyone other than professional bodybuilders can dedicate the required time.

    Nutrition? Probably meat and eggs?

They ate pork stew with salt, vinegar and blood. and very little of it, except before battle. and yea they kick the **** out of their bodies day in and day out. they trained for pain tolerance and toughness, not physique.

Lots of bodyweight training, probably similar to our military today.
