What Does Your Body Do With Excess Protein?

    Hey

I've been doing some reading online trying to find out what your body does when you consume excess protein. There seems to be 2 views on this:

1). Excreted in urea, so go to town and eat as much as you want
2). Glycogenesis: Your body converts it to glucose and if it isnt used its converted into fat.

I know in starvation 2 happens, but im eating 5 times a day so am far from it. Atm im in a cutting phase doing Carb Cycling. the reason id like to know is for my final meal i eat a pathetic amount of fish/meat in order to keep calories down. I'm wondering if i start eating more will my body convert it to fat? And if so how much of the calories will it actually convert to fat? I.e. how costly is the process calorie wise

Any threads on this would be brilliant, or web sites where i can read about it.

    Thanks

You are getting terms mixed up.

    Glycogenesis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycogenesis

    Gluconeogenesis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluconeogenesis

Glycogenesis does not happen during starvation. If glycogenesis and gluconeogenesis are taking place, then urea will be formed and excreted at the same time.

Your body stores protein in the form of muscle. Muscle is an energetically unfavorable form of tissue and your body will only store protein if it really thinks it needs it. It would much rather use excess ingested protein/amino acids for energy or for entry into gluconeogenesis/glycogenesis.

yes and excess glucose will be turned into fat.

therefore, what isnt used is stored

No. The protein is not stored. It is converted to something else, which is converted to something else, which is converted to something else that is stored. Important difference.

Ah, so after all those conversions how much of the original calories are actually left? Should i really worry about eating too much protein close to when i go to bed?

I don't know exactly how much ATP it costs to run all those reactions, but there is still about 4 Kcals per g of protein.

Assuming cals are needed for the conversion, can't we assume there'd be LESS than 4cals available to be stored as fat?

NET calories? Yes. But that's true for any energy source. Like the saying goes, it costs money to make money. The problem is that energy content of food is only grossly estimated. Bomb calorimetry does not represent the true extractable energy from foods. And direct calorimetry is not feasible for testing of all foods.

Could this be why 'healthier' foods might have cause of a lot of individuals to lose weight constantly?

Could less processed foods require more energy to convert, while leaving processed foods to be converted rather quickly?

Thus, that would yield 'healthier' foods to actually have a lower impact calorie count then a processed counterpart.

    Maybe?

protein in excess carbs in excess fats in excess
will either convert to fat[excess anything carbs, fats ,etc]
released as urine,or through fecal matter
alot of this is dependent upon metabolic rate, time of intake, luecine content of the given protein, training styles or habits I should say!

no they werent isocaloric i kept carbs steady (very low only from vegetables and a little bit of fruit.) the difference was drastic. the protein made me feel a little bloated and washed out, but when i dropped the protein and consumed the difference in peanut butter i had to stop after less than a week because i was getting fat...

    Pathetic.

    You made a claim.

from experience however, ive ate over 600 grams of protein a day for a couple of weeks str8 just to experiment. i didnt gain an ounce of fat. where as if i eat the same amount of cals of peanutbutter i put on a few pounds
Then you changed your mind and said it never happened.

    no they werent isocaloric
When confronted, your only reponse is "science is overrated". This isn't about "science" (not that you even have any idea what science is). This is about REALITY.

    How embarrassing.

lol i was being half sarcastic, why dont take whatever is up your ass out for a while. im soo embarassed on this online bbing forum where half the fukn people dont even go to the gym.(including you). i was making a generalization that people place way to much emphasis on dietary technicalities when they should use that effort towards an actual work ethic and determination. this **** aint rocket science and you my friend are a pretentious douche-bag that i would probably look at and laugh.. the end.

You certainly are quite the psychic, eh? You gleaned all that from a post pointing out your ignorance on a web forum? Bravo.

You may have been trying to prove a point (and perhaps a valid one, at that), but you failed miserably.

    Stay in school, kids!

Oops, your psychic powers have failed you again.

And if your definition of a "talking head" is someone who knows what he his talking about, then that is sad, though I'll gladly accept your insult. In my world the talking head is someone who spews ignorance just to hear his own voice. Hmm that kinda sounds like you in this thread...
