My kid is always finding pennies and putting them in his mouth. I know he's gonna end up swallowing one sooner or later.

I swallowed one of those plastic bingo chips when I was a kid. It's about the same size as a penny but plastic. I was too scared to tell anyone and ended up pooping it out a few days later.

I think I'd go with Erin though and call the Doc just in case.

    Update....

Well, it didn't pass. It turns out it was stuck in the esaphaugus, right beneath the trachea, so that if he ate or drank anything, it would most likely go down the wrong tube. The doctor had to put him under anesthesia and remove it. He's fine now...there was no swelling or irritation and he's able to eat/drink/etc.

I'm glad he's OK. Childproofing a home can be such a pain in the ass. I was helping my cousin's hubby w/some shelves and random fix-it things and I was amazed at how extra thought and consideration you had to put into how and where you put things when there's a toddler around.

We're always careful, but there's always something you miss. In this particular instance, he found a pair of pants I had thrown on a chase in my room and dug through the pockets to find the penny, which is weird because I usually don't keep change in my pockets.

    Glad to hear he's OK!

When my older son was 4, he shoved peas up his nose at dinner when I got up to check on the baby. He ended up having to go to the ER and they inserted a tool up his nose to get them all out. So, I understand the frustration! Needless to say, he never shoved anything up his nose again!

    Nerve damage?

The only possible side effects of the procedure was swelling of the eso****us (due to the instrument used for removal), which could lead to difficulty swallowing or food aversion altogether. Thankfully, he's had two meals since then and showed nothing out of the ordinary.

Yeah, I'm sure he learned his lesson as well. He hates hospital/doctor office environments and cried most of the time.

Exactly what I was going to say! Kids will eat strange things from time to time. The only thing you should be worried about is if it doesn't pass. My older brother fed me marbles when I was a baby and my mother didn't figure out what was going on until I passed the 6th one. I didn't make an apprearance to the doctor for any of those. The baby should be fine. Just keep an eye for bloating and pain.

I'm taking notes in an effort to prevent future penny-swallowing and pea-up-the-nosing.

Good to hear everything turned out well with your son. It'll be a great story when he's older. lol

According to the doctor, anything smaller than a penny (like a dime or peanut) would be small enough to go into the trachea...that's where the real fun begins. No more peanuts til he's 13 haha

Did it hurt when it came out?

I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. They can certainly scare the crap out of you sometimes.

It seems no matter how much you try to make sure everything is safe they still manage to get at the stuff they are NOT supposed to have. Plus its nearly impossible to keep your house that spic and span when the little ones are tiny like that.

    I'm glad everything is OK.

    Cheers

When my sister was 2 she stuck a bead yup her nose. It was one of those ones that is about 3 mm in diameter that you sew on clothes for decoration. She found my moms stash of sewing things. My mom tried to use a twist tie to get it out but she kept crying so they took her to the ER. They tried to get it out with some tool but since she kept sniffeling they thought that she might breath it into her lungs.... they had to wait 14 hours in the emergancy room till all the surgeries were done for the day so they could suction it out with a vaccum type thing. The had to put her to sleep for something that took 2 minutes to do :S
