So before i started doing these, i heard that this exercise didn't require a whole lot of weight, as this muscle is small and prone to injury. 25-30lbs was the suggested upper limit.
Anyway, i'm guessing this was BS because after months at around this weight, i've not seen any significant mass, relative to other areas (tricep etc). Some, but not enough.
Is it okay to go all out (within reason) with the shoulder press, with less reps?
BTW what is your DB shoulder press?

Like any muscle, progressive increases in weight is key to making gains long term. So keep moving the weights up.
To answer your other question, I usually use 45 to 50lbs DBsBRB... cutting for 12 weeks
Bench: 145kg (320lbs) x 1 <<< NEW PR August, 2009

I've always gone as heavy as I can with these, and i've seen significant shoulder growth over the past year or so. I max out with 80lb dbs 4-6 reps...any more weight and I can't kick it up to the press position. Its true that the delts are a small muscel group, however, rather than lower resistance try to limit the number of sets you do per week. 12-16 sets is where I range, however, everyone is different and that may not be what works best for you.

Unless your shoulder has been injured and your still in the healing process it wont effect it. Few years ago I tore the teres minor and once in a while I get pains, which stops be from doing 120's because I fear I might push it to far. So I have to wait until I feel I am ready for those.It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

all sets done 2 seconds up, 2 seconds down.
I do 1st set 35 lbs. x 12 reps
2nd set = 45 lbs. x 9 reps
3rd set = 50 lbs. x 7 reps
4th set- = 40 lbs x failure
I do it on a slightly incline bench. It seems to have made my traps big along with my deltoids.
Arnold presses are a lot harder for me and i use lighter weight and a straight up bench.

I am not a fan of db presses at all. You can not play with grip width to place increased emphasis on various parts of the shoulders like you can with barbell presses. Also db presses can be very misleading when it comes to weight used.
I knew lots of guys in the old gyms I frequented who would go heavy on db presses and not many of them had impressive shoulders.
