Dumbbell shoulder press: How much weight?

So before i started doing these, i heard that this exercise didn't require a whole lot of weight, as this muscle is small and prone to injury. 25-30lbs was the suggested upper limit.

Anyway, i'm guessing this was BS because after months at around this weight, i've not seen any significant mass, relative to other areas (tricep etc). Some, but not enough.

Is it okay to go all out (within reason) with the shoulder press, with less reps?

BTW what is your DB shoulder press?

Like any muscle, progressive increases in weight is key to making gains long term. So keep moving the weights up.

To answer your other question, I usually use 45 to 50lbs DBs

I've always gone as heavy as I can with these, and i've seen significant shoulder growth over the past year or so. I max out with 80lb dbs 4-6 reps...any more weight and I can't kick it up to the press position. Its true that the delts are a small muscel group, however, rather than lower resistance try to limit the number of sets you do per week. 12-16 sets is where I range, however, everyone is different and that may not be what works best for you.
    Goodluck.

Unless your shoulder has been injured and your still in the healing process it wont effect it. Few years ago I tore the teres minor and once in a while I get pains, which stops be from doing 120's because I fear I might push it to far. So I have to wait until I feel I am ready for those.

Go as heavy as possible while still keeping good tempo and form. My best with a supported back is 5 x 70s.

all sets done 2 seconds up, 2 seconds down.
    I do 1st set 35 lbs. x 12 reps
    2nd set = 45 lbs. x 9 reps
    3rd set = 50 lbs. x 7 reps
    4th set- = 40 lbs x failure

I do it on a slightly incline bench. It seems to have made my traps big along with my deltoids.

Arnold presses are a lot harder for me and i use lighter weight and a straight up bench.

I've been just using military presses from "going heavy" and Arnold Presses "shaping"...I guess. I seem to be getting good results as of late.

I usually use the 50's for the AP. I think it gives me a pretty good burn.

Depends, but normally 45-50lbs for 8 reps.

And yes, as it has been stated before, as long as you keep a steady, good form, you will need to increase weight.

    110x5 as well.

I think I'm gonna move the weight down to the 105s when I start cutting, though. I'm good for 7 with those.

My goal is the 135s by December.

Good post. Way too many guys pushing heavy weight on these turn them in to a chest exercise by leaning back. Drop the weight and use your shoulders with controlled reps folks.

    10 x 85 lbs

Try shortening your range of motion so that you can use a little heavier weight.

I do 70 x 8. I can get 75 for about 5 reps, but just stick with the 70's for more reps. I've never seen anyone in my gym do more than 80lbs for like 5 reps. You 110 guys must be strong as hell in the shoulder area. Id like to see a vid of this.

I prefer seated military presses for my delts but for dumbell presses I do 75 lbers.
    "Shut up and lift!"
    "Eat big to get big."
    "Deadlift and grow."
    'Train, Eat, Sleep."
    "Knowledge is power."
"What does not kill you, will make you stronger."

    Ergo sum fortissimus.

I am not a fan of db presses at all. You can not play with grip width to place increased emphasis on various parts of the shoulders like you can with barbell presses. Also db presses can be very misleading when it comes to weight used.

I knew lots of guys in the old gyms I frequented who would go heavy on db presses and not many of them had impressive shoulders.

This is my staple shoulder exercise. I do a bunch of warm ups to get everything loose start with 60's work my way up to 95's for 3 sets of 10. I feel as tho stickin with the 95's for higher reps causes more growth then higher weight for 4-6.
    210lbs here I come

I think they have a place in a routine. Are the solely good enough to give you big shoulders? No, but is any exercise?

I mix them in with bb presses and i think thats more then sufficient for overal front delt stimulation.

And for DB presses i do 70x8
    see ya at 225
