Can a person make good progress if they started later in life?

I never even touched a weight until I was 27, and didn't start seriously lifting until I turned 30. I keep reading research about how test levels start decreasing at this age and how it is harder to lose bodyfat. Well my goal is to get as strong as possible, hopefully one day with a 600 pound deadlift, but I notice most people who reach that level started lifting in their teens. Here I am at 30 and while I'm not giving up, I'm just looking for some hope that this is possible. Perhaps someone here has done it or knows a good example.

I see absolutley no reason why your starting age would have any effect on your goals. I didn't start until this year & am well on my way to reaching numerous goals. Just have a positive mindset and attitude and keep plugging away.

I can see this thread getting hammered! You are only 30...not at the end of your life, there are people here twice your age training hard, making good gains in physique and poundage. Anything is possible with hard work and a great plan. Al Beckles had a fantastic physique at 48 and beyond! hell my kids are nearly as old as you...

Screw age and lift heavy. At 30 there is no earthly reason why you cant work up to a 600 lb. deadlift if that is what you want to achieve.

Yes, he started younger than you but dammit, 680 at 64 y.o. and 198 lbs.!!? He is planning on 700 soon.

You've got 34 years to get there.

30? Man, I have ties older than you! LOL!

Seriously, just do it, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve if you stick to it and train not only hard, but smart. I also got started at your age (now I'm 51 years young), and I definitely was not the genetically gifted type at all...

Good luck and knock 'em dead!

    Hey Kansan,

Do these posts answer your question?

Guys like Yakabebe, thebigguy1, ScubaDave, and OldSupe are just a few prime examples that 30, 40 or older are not the end of the world.

I hope to still look as good as I do now, and as good as those guys when I am at that age and beyond and I'm going to sure work like hell to make it happen!

Like the other posters said, 30 is way young and you can make crazy progress.

Yes, he started younger than you but dammit, 680 at 64 y.o. and 198 lbs.!!? He is planning on 700 soon.

You've got 34 years to get there.

Laugh of the day: 30 = later in life! Would be true if you were a dog (can I still go duck hunting with my master?).

Actually, on a srs note, if the OP and others really don't see any older fit or above average fit people in everyday life, then the question is justifiable . . . and worrisome! Other than the older guys at the gym and some of the police/firemen, there's a whole lotta 'dumpy' out there.

You're only 30, and you're looking for some hope?

At age 45, right before I began training; had never lifted a weight in my life:

Taken last month; I'll be 62 tomorrow:

I'm nobody special, other than that I'm very goal-oriented. Consistent hard work and proper nutrition is the name of the game.

Don't waste your time with hope; DO.
    No brain, no gain.

"The fitness and nutrition world is a breeding ground for obsessive-compulsive behavior. The irony is that many of the things people worry about have no impact on results either way, and therefore aren't worth an ounce of concern."--Alan Aragon

J/K I didn't start lifting seriously until Jan. of this year and I'm 44. Age is just a number, if you are letting that get in your way at 30 by the time you hit 50 you will be ready to check in to a retirement home!

I dunno...30's pretty old. Might as well buy that rocking chair from you local Cracker Barrel while you can still carry it from the car to the porch.

    I keed. 30 is nothing...it's the new 20. LOL

OK, no offense, but how is it you've been a member here for 3.5 years with over 5,000 posts and you're asking one of the most ridiculous newb questions that gets asked here time and again?

And I can't hold a candle to anyone above me in this thread, but you can add me to the list of people that got back into this game in their 40's and have made some decent gains.

Lots of pics in my Bodyspace and my journal. No drugs, PHs or anything else that I can't get at my grocery store, either.

Honestly, my goals have always been fat loss, and general fitness. I don't doubt for one second that those goals are attainable at any age.

I also am not ignorant enough to think that attaining a nice physique is impossible. That is not my question though. I want to reach the level of an elite level powerlifter, having only started lifting when I reached 30. Showing me pictures of guys who are cut for a bodybuilding show doesn't help me. Powerlifting is a different game and that is why I am curious.

Most powerlifters started at far younger than me.
