    Deadlift with a belt?

one of my friends has now got a herniated disk, he said this was most probably from deadlifting ( he used no belt ), what do you guys think should you wear a belt even with good form????

Belt does not fix form. If your friend screwed up his back with deadlifts, the belt (or lack of one) had nothing to do with it.

I like to wear belts on my heavy sets. Usually 3 or less reps.

Once you get into higher weights it helps keep your core tight. I usually just wear mine for working sets with the heavier weights. It can help prevent lower back injuries if worn correctly/ correct technique is used with it.

As the other member said, wearing a belt won't help if you have ****ty technique.

Also tell your friend he should wear a belt if he deadlifts again.

i read this on another thread...

The purpose of a belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure. By pushing your stomach against the belt, you create internal forces that act on the anterior side of your spine. This works to stabilize your spine, and thus entire body.

    cant link the thread sorry

so if it stabilizes your body how would it not improve form?

It ONLY stabilizes your body if you can do a forceful valsalva maneuver. Otherwise, it does nothing other than be a stiff piece of leather on your back.

Just like you said. And yes, it helps give you slightly more stability. So because your stabilizers don't have to do so much work you can focus more energy on the lift and therefore lift more weight. You should be able to deadlift both light and heavy without a belt first before adding in a belt.

hey let me just tell you WOW belts make such a big difference! they help stabilize the back a lot more, i just bought one last week and started using one, now my lower back "hurts" less after heavy deadlifting sessions

take whatever pre-cautions to stay injury free
    bench press: 275/300
    squat: 365/400
    dead lift: 435/500

If your back hurts before using a belt then your form is bad.

IMO, wear a belt to increase your numbers, but safety wise, won't make a difference.
