    belly button hernia

Anybody ever have one of these? If so, what is the repair like and how did it effect your working out? Especially after the repair...are you able to lift weights like before?

Yeah it is common in pregnant women. I just noticed a small bump in my belly button. Going to the doc tomorrow...kind of scared he might say no more lifting weights!

I had one a while back, out patient surgery, no sweat. Give it a few weeks or a month before really hitting it hard. If it starts hurting some, back off and give it a little more healing time. I came out of mine better than when I went in. Doc inserted a patch that resembled a bicycle patch, just flexible. He went in and scraped around any muscle it would touch and the one that never grew completely together after birth, so the muscle would heal over the patch and it could never move. He was the one that informed me that my abdomen would now be stronger than it ever could have been before, even without the hernia.

I've had one for a few years and it only bothers me sometimes. My doctor looked at it and said I could wait on surgery until it bothers me or pops out. I don't do any direct abs work at all. It looks like a little lip over my belly button and hasn't changed since I noticed it.

You've already gotten the good advice here, O/P. I've had biliateral inguinal hernias, and an umbilical (belly button) hernia. (I've had back and shoulder surgery too.) You'll be fine. Give yourself a few weeks to heal and get back in slowly. You can't keep a good man down.

I've had one, just make sure the repair is done with a scope and not a direct repair. I would get it fixed. "KeepItMoving" is my brother in arms, I think he and I have had about 10 hernias between us!

I had one 14 years ago. Never forget it. It was during the Blizzard of '96 (for those of you who live in the mid-Atlantic to Northeast region). I got it pulling my car out of a snowbank. Incarcerated umbilical hernia was the medical terminology. Spent a day in the hospital after surgery. Was pretty nasty, still make me a little nauseus thinking about it now.

I think it's a better repair. I recovered much quicker from the scope and haven't had any re-occurances from a scope. I've had 2 direct repairs and 3 indirect (scope) and both of the directs blew out shortly after being done all 3 scope procedures are holding fast.

In my mind, NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER have a direct repair!

Doc said it's an umbilical hernia and not to worry about it unless it starts to hurt or gets bigger...hope he is right! He said this kind is usually not a problem...if it had been in the groin or something then definately surgery.
