I used to work at a gym where they used rubber weights and obviously still got results. But now I'm my friends gym where he uses olympic iron weights and everything is much harder ex I could bench 2 rubber plates on each side at the one gym, now I can only do 1 plate and 25 each side. Olympic weights all the way

Whatever. I can only bench 34 pounds using iron weights, but I won the National Feather Lifting comp last year, benching EASILY 900 pounds of feather stuffed pillows from the JCPenny collection.

lol wut? 900 pounds of feathers is the same as 900 pounds of iron or rubber. The size of material will be different in size and density but not weight.

Honestly guys i go to two gyms. Not trying to BS you here at all. The iron pit has all traditional steal plates and the gold's has rubber coated GPI plates.

The rubber plates just do not feel the same. Those Rubber coated GPI plates did not feel as heavy as the machined York plates.

Maybe its in my head, i dunno. Those Rubber ones feel lighter.

    agreed!!

this is true. may be the same pounds but the feel is just different. pure iron feels heavier than rubber, cement and what ever else.

mabey it has somthing to do with density or somthing.

I also feel rubber db's are lighter than iron ones. I know its just my mind playing tricks on me, so I use that to my advantage and go a little heavier. Those in my position should do the same and reap the benefits.

Indeed the weight is the same however I have felt the slight difference in the various types of dumbells/plates. I honestly believe it to be many different things that contribute to this feeling: size, material, and weight distribution.

Size, material, and weight distribution go hand in hand in my opinion because when I pick up those adjustable dumbbells (the ones with the plates you can add/remove) it feels "easier" to handle vs solid iron dumbbells which normally are larger and have a different shape (different size, material and weight distribution.)

Yes the weight is the same but one must remember your muscles do not understand numbers they only understand force. This would give reason to why some claim they can for example flat bench press a certain amount at one gym and and flat bench press something different at another; its physics.

This is really my 2 cents on the issue because I do not know any of things to be a fact.

There is a difference between materials. It doesn't matter if the weight is the same.

Try squatting your max with an olympic barbell and plates, then try it with standard weights. It will be lower on the standard because the bar has less spring. Something as little as the flex of the metal can effect the feel of the weight.
Two hands working do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.

Most of the problems with the bodies and minds of the folks occupying the current culture involve an unwillingness to do anything hard, or anything that they'd rather not do. I applaud your resolve, and I welcome you to the community of people who have decided that EASY will no longer suffice.

The human body is in an abnormal state when hard physical labor is removed from it's lifestyle.

I will tell you the truth.
When you lift rubber your brain does not engage all muscles because you believe it is easier therefore you don't obtain the best results.

well, I am joking but it could be true too,

    This thread again?

I thought we came to the conclusion a few weeks ago, that 10lbs of iron was heavier than 10lbs of rubber, because iron is heavier.

Come on people, get with the program.

Maybe its in my head, i dunno. Those Rubber ones feel lighter.
lol..x2. I go to 24hr and they have the rubber weights and the gym at my work uses the iron ones and everytime i workout at work the weights feel heavier.

I think it's all the banging around and the sound of iron on the bar that makes the metal plates seem more hardcore. I just switched to gym that has rubber coated plates about 2 weeks ago and my lifts are exactly the same, but the eerie silence sometimes make me feel like I am not working at the same intensity level.

Since you took me seriously, I have a little riddle for you.

What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of rocks?

The only difference is weight distribution, noise and damage to equipment and floors.
