What does a hernia feel like?

I was doing squats today, and I felt like a burning sensation near where my pelvis pokes out on the right side. It was sort of around the lower right side of my stomach. It didn't hurt, it just felt like i got mild rug burn or something like my shorts were stretching on the skin. I finished out the set and stopped. I just started squatting again recently after knee problems a year ago.

    Is this a hernia?

most likely not...as it impossible to tell for sure over the puter. but a hernia occurs mainly in the groin or abdomen. it a weaking of the abdominal wall which allows the intestine come through the muscle. most often does not hurt if it reducible (able to push it back in) if its not reducible the intestinal blood flow can get cut off hurt like a mother and cause tissue damage.

Right so what should I be feeling for. I have no idea what my intestines leaking through my abs would feel like. Should I feel for a lump?

If you are not overweight it should be very easy to see. It will usually happen through the path of least resistance, your groin or your belly button. If you do not see something poking out or feel somthing poking out at the top of your sac when you cough then your fine. Notice this should not be tricky(haha) unless you dont know your own body. If it felt like it was stretching skin it could be from a muscle pump (that happens occassionally).

I had this exact same symtoms. once during a heavy deadlift. I thought i was having a hernia, it burned in that area for like 30 seconds then stopped completely and i carried on no problems.

    Happened once during squats too.

Have heard a few people say it. its just that you trap something i think. Ive had it in my rib cage driving and i thought i was hving a heart attack, nearly crashed, but i breathed in and stretched and it dissapeared.

i think its just catching ur insides in ur bones for a second ( i could be way off tho)
Long way to go... will get there though!

herniated discs in ur back - the fluid inbetween vertebrae leaks out a bit

Might be a sports hernia or osteitis pubis if you can't feel stuff pushing through. I would get it checked out.

I have the same thing, except it's chronic ( feel it all the time ). There's no 'protrusion', I passed the 'cough test' etc. but there's something really wrong. I've had this for about 6 months now.

Hopefully I'm getting a CT scan soon. Not exactly looking forward to being out of the gym for 2 months, but if it's a hernia it will only get worse if ignored.

If you can't get it back in your body then you need to call 911 or get your butt to an ER fast.

You can get gangrene of the intestine and it can kill you.

DH had a horrible hernia years ago but the mesh surgery really worked great.
    Hugs,
    Heather

Yeah I'm just lifting as per normal. I'm being very very careful with my breathing as that seems to affect it most. Inhaling and Exhaling before each rep, holding the breath during. Also I'm making sure that I never go too heavy.

I'm scheduled to have my CT scan this Tuesday. If I can remember, I'll post the results here.

My last post in this thread was almost a year ago, results were requested so here goes:

Test results were negative. They found nothing abnormal. They have no idea what it is, it's still there, although it's less painful these days. They say exploratory surgery might find it, but my doctor and I agreed it wouldn't be worth it.

On a side note I am getting the 'ball pain' described above by other posters. My right testicle was killing me in the gym yesterday after a squat session. It's still slightly sore right now. I 'checked' and do not have any of the obvious symptoms that would indicate a hernia there.

I'm not sure what it was, I feel better today.

i had a hernia for 7 years. played 5 years of football and began lifting in that time. what really pushed it for surgery was when i was lifting 60lbs of oil at work. i could not stand up. i had to stay bent over for that first day. that was in november. i had the surgery in january. the weird thing thou is that the day before my surgery i deadlifted 550. the doctors thought i didnt have a surgery but an overgrowth of veins. i had an ultrasound and they still thought it was the veins. it took a MRI to have the docs change their opinion. if i were you i would make sure that it is a hernia and then pick and choose what you want to do. the doc said no lifting for 6 weeks. well 5 weeks after the surgery i deadlifted 680 so i did not lose any strength. i had a hernia for 7 years and all they did was cover it up and that was all.
