He's not overthinking it.
Close grip and wide grip curls both emphasize two completely different parts of the biceps, thus it is a valid question.
Wide grip will be the short head, narrower grip will be the long head. IMO , most people have a lagging short head because people always do what's "more comfortable" and "allows for more weight in the exercise" which is always a narrower grip.
A standard Bicep routine:
- Barbell Curl ( Don't do it narrow)
- Incline Dumbbell Curl
- Preacher Curl
