    Progenix

Well, I broke down to try it, prior to the recent 'fraud' thread on Progenix...I figured with all the recent hype on the formula changes, if any, etc. I would give some comments. It arrived in the mail today so will post some initial thoughts tomorrow. Any questions, fire them off early so I will address them since most people only seem to talk about Progenix but not many have used it.

First, cost...it is expensive..no way around it...Do the results justify the cost, hope to find out soon.

And no this is not sponsored. Hell, I couldn't even get the discount code for the Pro Pack.

This will not be a daily log as my training varies but will answer questions and post how I feel/perform during the next 30 days.

    Thanks,

Just finished workout and had 1st serving...

Initial Comments: The powder is really fine and mixes incredibly well. I chose chocolate in both and it tastse like chocolate milk...not overwhelming at all as I am not a big chocolate fan. I would give it 10/10 on flavor...10/10 mixability...

As I am doing both recovery and more muscle, recommendations are 2 scoops of both post workout...and they recommend another 2 scoops of both at another time of the day...that would mean a bag would only last 15 days...A bit obscene for price based on 2 servings a day...

Not sure if there are still reps for Progenix around here but is that correct????

I will be using just 1 serving a day so the More Muscle/Recovery will last a total of 30days.

Pretty sure its 1 scoop of each post workout. Unless they changed it to 2 scoops each? I have the new pro-pack on the way through the "progenix challenge". Hopefully it works just as well.

I'm not a Progenex rep but the protocol for the products has generally been:

Recovery is to be taken post-wo only. More Muscle is to be taken definitely post-wo and optionally first thing in the AM and/or whenever else.

Serving sizes for the new products are 2 scoops.

I'm guessing the added fructose and fluffiness of the hydrowhey take up more space.

Yep it is 2 scoops. I will be taking 2 scoops of both pwo and on off days so it will last exactly 30 days.

    Day 2

I will not be logging this everyday but a couple of comments I wanted to add.

I am not adding any extra carbs PWO or in my diet. Since I do glycogen depleting training, this could be interesting.

Comparasions: I have tried pretty well every PWO powder, favorite being Torrent or Core ABC, for recovery purposes. I have tried whole foods as well which, although healthier, harder to eat after HIIT, hence stuck with Torrent or Core ABC.

I will be eating a meal a couple of hours after taking the Pro Pack serving (no different than before).

Expectations: Since I am cutting about 60gr of carbs PWO (from Torrent), I expect increased DOMS/performance (based on past experiences), however, I end up increasing protein by close to 40grams. This may result in decrease bf% (good) but also decrease in performance (bad).

Sucess: I should know within a week if the decrease in cabs will affect performance and how Progenix works compared to other PWO.

Ill be following! The original progenex gave me incredible recovery. I didnt add any carbs to it post workout. I plan on doing the same with the new version. Wish I understood more about the changes to the new formula though? Ive asked reps but didnt get much of a response.

Either way good luck and good job so far!

Since I am on off days I must admit that it hurts taking this stuff on off days due to the cost. Sure you recover on these days and build muscle but it remains pricey.

No changes to report. Dropped a lb but will see of it's related at all.

For just mixing with water, the taste of this stuff is really good. For those that like chocolate flavored powders, you guys would love this stuff.

On the recovery side, by the end of this week I should know how this stuff holds up. I have been doing some doubles for workouts which would normally cause some increased soreness (DOMS), a bit of fatigue and reduced performance.

As I said, it will take about 2 weeks before I feel comfortable one way or another on commenting on the recovery side with this product.

Ok, so it has been a week. During this time I have squeezed in some extra workouts with my regular training. Result, no DOMS or recovery issues?!?! Ok, not about to sell the farm to buy this stuff after 1 week but my previous experiences on low carb PWO were not good (DOMS and poor performance). I have noticed any increase in performance however, theoretically, if it allows me to train 2x a day, this should be seen soon enough.

I won't pass judgement on this till the end of the 30 days but if I survive next week on a double dosing of exercise, I may consider running a second month.

Don't expect me to say it is worth the moning till at least a month into this stuff. The price is nuts compared to something like Torrent (a favorite).

I will update next week as well unless something changes from now till then. Not tired with the taste and as a tip, when it says 12 ounces for the 4 scoops, it means it. It mixes so smooth you don't need the extra water.

Ok, it has been 2 weeks now. Taste remains excellent....and mixing ability as well. They are both 10/10's, and I don't even like chocolate. I know, but who cares about taste, is it working.

I don't claim to know the science/logic, but to date, Progenex is the best recovery product I have ever taken. I am not taking any additionaly carbs but I have no DOMS and training 2x sometimes.

I am dosing only PWO now, but will be going with an additional 1/2 dose PWO when I do 2 workouts a day. Just can't affort 2 servings a day at $125.

I will be ordering it again so I can give a fair 2 month review on this. But so far, it is by far the most effective protein supplement I have ever used, or recovery product for that matter.

    Thoughts/Questions, let me know.

    3 Week ProPack Review

Finished 3rd week. I have only had 1 day that I felt not 100% recovered. For those that follow crossfit, the past week of WODS were hell so that is pretty solid. I have continued with the 2x a day training so I remain thrilled with how it is working.

I may not understand the science behind why this is working, but I am impressed.

This is certainly a bit cost prohibitive, however, it can be justified. My pre consists (currently) of presurge and training empty stomach. I do not take carbs or BCAA's pre/intra/post. Prior, I was taking Torrent and Core ABC. When you combine the cost of this stack with ProPack for 30 days, we are looking close to the same costs for slightly better recovery, with decrease bf% (down about 5lbs).

I ordered a second month supply to see how long I can go at 2x a day. Obviously, a lower price point makes this a no brainer. I would be hesitant to recommend this to those that do not do intense training that result in severe DOMS or muscular fatigue. I don't believe the traditional body builders program would necessarily need this for the cost/benefit ratio. Those who train using intense bb techniques (twice a day/drop sets/legitimate failure),this would also work well.

I think training intensity/technqiue is the justification for this product and why it is not meant for everyone.

    Any questions/comments, let me know.

    Quick question:

Why does the recovery run out before more muscle. I never kept track of number of servings in first order but something is off.

I will be counting on my second month run. I am guessing 2-3 more servings of more muscle.

    Thanks

I learned a bit about Progenix today at a Europa fitness Expo, and the rep was saying how CFers love it. It was a buy 2 get 25% discount I think, so 2 tubs would've been like $100 if I recall.

I can't necessarily comment on why it seems to be working for you so well. It's quite possible it's placebo effect. When we pay such a high price for a product, we really want to find results to reduce dissonance. It's possible that it's something specifically related to the product, but in all honesty I think if it was put in a double-blind trial with another protein drink, say Optimum Nutrition, or whatever, I'd be surprised if one of them led to better results. Subjective results by a likert-rating scale of pain, recovery feelings, etc., may be found, but any analysis of muscle tissue change would likely be unaffected. But that's just the cynical scientist in me.

Now, as to what I really came on here to say.....there's some compelling research that says when you take only protein without a "shuttle" mechanism, you lose a lot of it, because most of it is absorbed through digestive processes before it gets into the bloodstream and through to the muscles. To counter this, people talk about using a shuttling agent to shuttle the protein to your muscles. Specifically they mention a fast acting sugar. If you are doing exercise that uses stores of glycogen as a resource, you'll certainly see the value added by....glycogen repletion. So the fact that you're using it with that protein should kill two birds with one stone. I noticed that Progenix has very little carb in it. I've seen some decent research that the carb/protein ratio should be 2/1. Progenix is not. Chocolate milk on the other hand is. But that brings up the whole debate about ingestion of fat during the post-workout window. Which brings up the debate of the existence of the post-workout window. So as you can see....hard to find what really works.

I've read research highlighting the benefit of the 2/1, and chocolate milk though. But since you appear to be very in-tuned to your body and you carefully track and document your experiences, add some carbs into your PWO regimen to see if giving that protein a "shuttle" works. Simple fix...put it in a fruit smoothie.

Sorry to be wordy. Trying to nail down the science in all this short of a PhD in biochem is tedious though. Good luck. If you give it a go, please keep us informed. If you want me to dig through my old studies to see what I can find, just PM me as I may not remember to check here. If they're still on my computer I'll be happy to send them along.
