"Aesthetic"

It's starting to be used way too much in describing a certain "look." One person's "aesthetic" is another's "too smooth", "too skinny," or "too bulky."

Bodybuilders develop physiques that are out of proportion in comparison to "real" physiques anyway. Their arms are bigger, lats wider, and rear legs unrealistic, and honestly, I think that looks better anyway.

    Definition of AESTHETIC
    1
a : of, relating to, or dealing with aesthetics or the beautiful <aesthetic theories> b : artistic <a work of aesthetic value> c : pleasing in appearance : attractive <easy-to-use keyboards, clear graphics, and other ergonomic and aesthetic features — Mark Mehler>

So, yes, one person's aesthetic is different than another person's. It's a term that should be used to describe the overall physique as opposed to something specific (ie: someone can have an aesthetic physique but show up retaining water/fat and look smooth).

I think aesthetic just means having the right proportions. You're either aesthetic of you're not, regardless of conditioning.

    Agree with you Tyrbolift.

    I think though, 2 things:

    1. 'Aesthetic' is a term originally used in bbing circles when some physiques came about that did not conform to the typical physiques that were the trend at the time. I dont know what time or era this was, but I'm guessing the 70s maybe? In this era, most physiques were 'aesthetic' i.e. proportionate (not legs so much as not a big emphasis on them), tight waist, great flow etc etc. And if a physique was seen that was not following these rules, then the term would be used to describe a physique as 'not aesthetic' - being compared with the 'aesthetic' physiques that were winning shows - Arnold, Sergio, Zane blah blah..

So, these days - The term is usually describing that type of physique.

    2. 'Aesthetic' is usually used by circles of people/industries to describe something that the majority of people see as the main thing that the word describes i.e. Arnold was deemed by the majority of people as aesthetic in the 70s, Haney 80s, Wheeler or Levrone in the 90s and so on..

So when this word is brought up - most people have an idea of what the aesthetic subject is - For me, in bbing, it would be physiques fromt he 70s (golden era) and I'm guessing that would be the case for the majority of people here.. but some would think otherwise..

I think if nobody had ever thought about or brought up the idea of aesthetics until now, we'd look at the pros now who have flow to their physiques, proportionate, tight waists etc..

But at the end of the day, if you feel branch warren is the most pleasing to you, then he is your most aesthetic bber for YOU.

The term aesthetic should not even be used in bodybuilding. Words like 'symmetry' and 'proportion' are what should be used in bodybuilding. They are words that are not subjective..someone is either symmetrical or they are not..

But with aesthetic you have 30% of people thinking someone is aesthetic and 70% thinking he is not.. then arguments start. Then you have the retards who have no understanding of the word, and think that just because someone is smaller, they are more aesthetic. So the word is not something that should be used here.

Fuking this. Everyone just likes to whine about the use of the word. Tight waist, broad shoulders, proportion, symmetry, etc create aesthetics.

No, it's just that the word is so overused that it's lost it's meaning. It's a catchall for "pleasing to my eye in balance".

I use the term to describe physiques that are appealing to the majority. Slim waists, wide shoulders, etc. Its a pretty good term but it varies significantly from person to person.

So, yes, one person's aesthetic is different than another person's. It's a term that should be used to describe the overall physique as opposed to something specific (ie: someone can have an aesthetic physique but show up retaining water/fat and look smooth).
you can say aestethic about anything. you can say brandon curry has an aestethic torso but not legs. aestethic arm. aestethic stage.

it simply means that it looks good. an expression that can never really support your argument. in bb could be any type of physique. very subjective as is all art, and closely linked to emotion.

but you can see a pattern. a majority probably can agree that kevin levrone is more aestethic than dave palombu for example. then it gets very gray between others like centopani and hide and silvio.

IMO in bodybuilding as it is used today, the term describes a combination of shape and lines (first and foremost), proportion, symmetry, skin and conditioning.

Saying everything is like saying nothing. If someone is to use the word (which I see in practically every other post lately), it's best that they explain what they mean by it. Too many times I see the word accompanied by a pic and I think "hmmm. Aesthetics must means 'legs too skinny.'"

a men's aesthetic physique is probably like these physiques

none of today's bodybuilders are aesthetic. None of them in terms of following the old world view of muscles.
