I've been getting mixed information about dumbbell flyes. My trainer says that flyes would just be a waste of time because they work to sculpt and define your pectorals, whereas I'm trying to bulk up and add mass. I've read various articles that say that dumbbell flyes work wonders for adding mass to your chest.
I'm fairly "small" at the moment because I've only been working out for about 2-3 months.

DB flys are good for adding size to the chest, your trainer sounds like a jackass, no offense.
Short cuts to success are often paved with lies.
1/13/16: Massive hernia.
5/10/16: Finally back to lifting, light but improving.

Exercises that sculpt? I dont see how an eexercvise can change the shape of a muscle.
Shaping of your muscles is genetics, everyones are different.
Atm for chest...
Incline barbell bench 3 sets
Flat dumbell bench 3 sets
Incline flyes 2 sets
I use flyes to pretty much finish my chest off, and coming from a person with a weak chest it's help me add a lot more to my bench and improve the size.
He said they are useless for 'mass' well mass comes from diet, exercises are basically just a guideline, but it's always good to include your 3 main lifts, squats, bench, dead, then things like barbell rows, chins, dips, overhead press. (Little off topic)
Flyes are just an accessory exercise.
What your trainer said seems to be an average personal trainer broscience comment, disregard it.
Train on your ownm learn from articles and experience, it's much better than anything they have to say.

if you're at a gym, with tons of dumbells/barbell, i would just do all of them, reduce the set per exercise and do more exercise.
so if you did something like this before:
3 X flat barbell press
3 X incline
3 X decline.
you can go
2 X flat
2 X incline
2 X decline
2 X fly
just my opinion it's smarter, because there's a theory out there that doing 1 working set is nearly as good as the traditional 3 sets (just a theory, i do not know if it's true), but just for the shake of it, do 2 instead of 3, that way you're right in the middle and you can add in an additional movement.

OP you may be interested in this thread.
I know rite? Wait... this is reminding me of something...
If you want to get big and bulky, you'll stick to doing BB and DB flat, incline and decline presses. If you're happy with the amount of muscle you've got, go for flyes. Flyes will rip, cut and define your pre-developed pectoral muscles

Your trainer probably did some flyes, at Twinkies postworkout and grew breasts. Now he doesn't recommend them.
Flyes take your triceps out of the exercise and put all of the strain on your pecs. You will not be able to use much weight. That's another problem people have with them-it hurts their ego. Flyes provide dynamite pump, at least for me.

Flyes have never done much for me, it would add mass to targeted muscles to the degree they are engaged. My problem is I never manage to engage the pecs well with flyes, it his my delts just as much if not more. I prefer to focus on bench, specifically dumbbell bench, I find it hits pecs like no other. If you're looking for mass, up your cals to 4000+ per day.
