    Oatmeal and egg whites!!

O.K. can anyone tell me why bodybuilders eat egg whites and oatmeal for breakfast? Is there any benefit to it? Do you mix the egg whites in with the oatmeal or just have oatmeal with scrambled egg whites on the side? This combination has always sounded so unappealing to me. I would rather have an eggwhite omelet with veggies in it and whole wheat toast on the side. Or oatmeal with protein powder mixed in and fruit.

    Cool My thoughts...

Lol I think that "oatmeal and eggwhite" thing is basically bodybuilders getting there 40/30/30 (depending on person). An easy way to look at it is if envision your plate and pretended it was a pie chart, 40% is protein of your choice, 30% is CLEAN carbs-veggies, 30% is CLEAN fat ie. nuts, etc. Oatmeal and eggwhites are cheap..... and can be cooked with many things, lol. So thats my basic breakdown, lol hope it helps!

I thought it was unappealing when I first heard about it...but after I tried it I LOVED IT! Im hooked! I just mix in the egg whites and oats with a little bit of water, and nuke for about 2 1/2 minutes. Put some splenda and cinnamon in it and YUMMY!! Very filling as well. Nice creamy consistency.

    I'm a bb/competitor and I eat very little oatmeal...because I don't like it.

I'll do scrambled egg whites with a yolk, some ff cheese melted on top and some plain wheat toast on the side.

Kimm I have this meal a couple of times a week and I love it.

Mostloyal, your recipe sounds like one I got a long time ago for "high protein pancakes" take 4 egg whites and mix with 1/4 c. uncooked oats and 1/2 mashed ripe banana. Add some vanilla, cinnamon and splenda and cook in a pan with PAM like pancakes. It make three or four pancakes and I usually top it with fruit or sugar free jelly. Takes a while to make but it is really good.

ah, i just posted this in my journal! i'll copy and paste here:

    this is for stovetop cooking:

add the egg whites in slowly right after turning the heat down. it thickens the oatmeal and makes it creamy (seems very indulgent!) then i add the chopped apple right at the end, so that it is minimally cooked (nutrient preservation) and i also add some stevia and cinnamon. it's excellent!

yeah, try it if you haven't yet!

Though during contest prep I use oatmeal for a carb up meal. 1/2 cup oatmeal, mashed up banana, little cinnamon and splenda. Mix with hot water for a pancake consistency. Cook like pancakes and top with pb and all fruit jam...very yummy!

    hmmm

i've never actually tried the eggwhites in my oatmeal, but always read that on people's diets and also wondered if they were putting them together or what.......i'll have to try it. I have oatmeal everyday for breakfast and never tire of it. I have oatmeal, 1 scoop vanilla protein and either 2 cut up strawberries or half a banana w/sprinkle of cinnamon. I never needed the stevia.

i've also make protein pancakes. Funny thing is my kids love them also. So i'll make a couple dozen on Sunday and they stay firm enough in the fridge that they just pop them in the toaster in the morning (think leggo my eggo) and eat them for breakfast. Granted they still like to have syrup on them like regular pancakes, but at least it's sugar free.

The direct is answer to the question is for the combination of the carbs and protein.
Eggs for there high quality protein and oatmealfor the complex Carbs. These (mostly the carbs) provide the energy for the workout. And the carbs are believed to create an "insulin spike".

Insulin most effectively moves nutruiants to the cells, so the insulin most efectively moves the protein from the eggs to the cells.

Same reason they toss down a handful of oatmeal with whey protein shakes etc.

That all is the short version.

I thought it sounded very unappealing at first too, but I really enjoy the combo in the morning with my coffee. I have them separately cooked--not mixed--but I think it just goes well together. Sometimes I'll also have either a banana or cottage cheese with it too. (Again, foods I never expected to go well together on a plate, but are surprisingly satisfying when it comes to taste, appetite, and nutrition).

Haha this is my identical breakfast pretty much! At first I was like, you have to be joking me...because I started off with a pre-set meal plan from a BBer friend of mine...Now I love it and I literally eat it every morning.

Either oatmeal, splenda, cinammon, banana or oatmeal, splenda, cinnamon and berries (preferably frozen because they melt and its awesome)

I have 6 eggwhites and I cook them omlette style thin in a pan...usually with some green onion, peppers, something to jazz it up, and I top it with fresh salsa (that I buy at the store because I am lazy)..or sometimes I just cook the eggs plain and top it with franks and call it a day.

I have this for breakfast probably 5 days out of the week. It's clean, filling, and it totally grows on you.

Liquid egg whites added to minute oats and microwaved makes a great quick pancake. Protein and complex carbs, what's not to like?

Bodybuilders eat lots of lean protein and complex carbs throughout the day. Eggs and oats are traditional breakfast foods that fit the bill. You could eat grilled chicken and sweet potato if you wanted to, to provide your body with the protein and carbs desired. A healthy source of fat and a fruit or veggie would be a nice addition as well.

    Wink

I use 30g oats/4 egg whites - I cook the oats first in the microwave with water and then cook the egg whites separately and mix them in with the equal/stevia... find this consistency is better for me than cooking the oats with the egg whites.

I need to find liquid egg whites, am sure it is limited in Australia?! Anyone know where I could get it from (online?)!

    Enjoy!

I have oats and egg whites often as pancakes.

1 pack of whole 5 grain hot cereal or 3/4 cups of old fashioned oats
    1/2 cup of egg whites
mashed banana or blueberries or strawberries
    dash of cinnamon
    vanilla extract (tiny bit)

mix and cook in frying pan. I enjoy it with a tablespoon of peanut butter on it and no sugar added syrup. Absolutely yummy.

I would rather have an eggwhite omelet with veggies in it and whole wheat toast on the side. Or oatmeal with protein powder mixed in and fruit.
Do NOT mix your protein powder in with your oatmeal! LOL. I tried that and everything from the taste to the texture was absolutely disgusting. Yuck!

Wish I'd read this first. Just forced down many raw eggs. Was doubting I could stick this out.

I eat egg whites & oatmeal every morning for breakfast. It's cheap & easy to make. I like the protein pancakes the best, but occassionally throw some berries in my oats & eat egg whites w/ salsa on the side. It might sound gross, but I also like pb & cottage cheese mixed into my oats. Lots of different options out there!

Just had the most amazing breakfast ever! Have wanted to add peanut butter to my diet a long ago but just couldn't love the taste.
I'm going for a 30min run/walking (starting my training after a month of sickness and another of recovery) and then 20min yoga so I woke up about 2h early and this is what I ate

Pre-workout Best Ever Oatmeal + Egg Whites

    40g Oatmeal cereal
    125ml non-fat milk
    5g peanut butter
    5g 85% dark chocolate

    On the side:
    3 egg whites
    1/2 slice of non-fat cheese

Put the oats on a bowl, add the milk and put it in the microwave for about 1.5/2 minutes. Add the peanut butter and the chocolate (previously chopped) and just stir.
The eggs whites after taken out of the pan just put it some cheese and mix it to add some flavour.

    316cal, 37g carbs, 8g fat, 25g protein!

    Enjoy

I just tried egg whites, oatmeal, stevia and cinnamon and it was gross. I can't get that nasty taste out of my mouth. I think I will stick to my protein shakes and sweet potatoes pre workout.
