In terms of health, what are the benefits of rice and what are the benefits of potatoes? In terms of a good source of carbs, which is better?

Not true at all - sweet potatoes are great, but most beans (e.g., kidney) and hulled barley have far lower GI.
But I agree with overall sentiment that potatoes > rice.
I also think that rice and pasta needs to be carefully weighed unless ur eating as many cals as possible, as people don't seem to realise how many cals are in these foods. It's difficult to have a satisfying 500 cal meal with either as your carb source given that u probably only want 250 carb cals, whereas its a bit more possible with potatoes

If u want the satisfying meal and are hungry, consider using roasted pumpkin with sweet potatoe as the carb source.
Pumpkin is about 25 cals per 100 gram, tastes great, and is actually a starch, with about 80% of its net carbs as starch (similar to sweet potato). It's more nutrient dense than any starch too by a mile. Has a similar taste to sweet potato.

Yeah it's awesome - pumpkin is very underrated too. Unlike other low cal veggies, a very low % of its net carbs are sugar and its a good source of every nutrient except B12, D, and selenium (http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c20fw.html), which are not hard to get nutrients, which makes me wonder given its great taste why it hasn't got the reputation as one of the great veggies, particularly as its a veggies where eating lots of it isn't painful.
Tastes really good with non-fat cheese singles + PB too. When cutting if I ever wanted a binge, I would just have about 700-1000 grams of pumpkin, a bit of PB, non fat cheese, and it be about 500 cals and a really nutritious meal
(You can microwave the pumpkin with glad wrap and it stays moist if u want no oil.)
