As I already said, 15-20% is what most people go by and wealthier areas will be at the top of the scale.
I live in a major metropolitan area in the northeast.
20% is the standard here.
I'm sure it is, because like I said, you're way behind the times and you still thought, until moments ago, that 10% was the average.

While I never tip below 15%, i'm also a bit confused how anyone is justifying a steady increase in the standard tip rate. It's a percentage. The cost of food (especially in restaurants) has increased dramtically far exceeding the inflation rate. Tipping anything over a MAX of 20% would be ludicrous.

A lot of people that do these jobs are qualified in other areas, but due to lack of jobs in that field would rather work in the mean time than be on unemployment. I've known engineers who for a time waited tables. I think that attitude is commendable. You on the other hand are someone would much rather live off welfare than work a job like that.

So, because you live in an unusual area where tips are rather out of the normal statistical bandwidth -- it is therefore 20% tips for everyone.
You sound like a federalist.
10% is the average -- in reality --- 15% is above average and 20% is huge.
I feel like I am talking to a bankster from wallstreet at this point where everyone is making CEO 1000 dollars a day net
If you've ever eaten at a Denny's off a highway 20% is a crap ton more than the normal and minimum wage is not 20 dollars an hour.

One time my friends and I went to a bar to get some wings. Ordered a beer each then asked to see the menu. She gave us our beers and told us the kitchen was closed for renovations. "Okay can you close my tab? Lets go somewhere else." So I pay and walk out to the patio where we sit drinking our beers.
Then some bitch came out and was like "Blahblah blah I'm an annoying kunt. I just happened to look over at your receipt and noticed you didn't tip. Blahblah I used to work as a bartender and most of our pay comes from tips. You should really go back in there and give her more money."
LOL even after I told her that we came for food and not drinks she insisted we go back in and pay more money. She was bitching at us for like 5min before I could shoo her away. LOL WTF I'm supposed to tip a bitch for using a bottle opener when I came for the food?

Lol this. I work at a bar as a bouncer. The bouncers get paid minimum wage while bartenders get paid less per hour but leave with ~$70+ a night after a five hour shift. Bouncers leave with literally half as much as the bartenders, yet the bartenders are the ones who complain about money 90% of the time. The entitlement is astounding among people who get tipped.
Lol @ miscers trying to guilt you into tipping. "You shouldn't be going out if you can't afford to tip." Don't tell me how to spend my fuking money. I do generally tip, but only because I'm not an *******. Wish the whole concept was put back to what it used to be.
For example, sometimes when I'm friendly with the patrons coming into the bar I remind them what specials are for the night or something every so often a guy will appreciate it and give me a dollar or two. That is how tipping should work.☆☆☆☆☆USA ¢яєω☆☆☆☆☆

I just ignore things like this. I tip depending on the attitude they bring. But never more than two bucks. For phucks sake brahs
Reminds me of this one chic at the door if a club that took your money to get in. She had a tip jar next to it and said you can't get in unless you tip. I said bullshyt and walked in and told the manager. Her tip bucket was taken

First comment nailed it.
"This article must contain the rudest voice I have read by far. Clearly you must be some sort of restaurant employee and have hopefully lost your job because of your bitterness toward every human being in general that isn’t yourself."
I cant even remember the last time I've had a waiter that wasnt some arrogant, bitchy single mom. Lol, then they want a tip.Eats tuna with hands to seem like I fingered a girl crew

I tip based on a set of criteria I've outlined in my spreadsheet. It's the most fair way I've found to calculate what you should pay. Some of the items that are weighed to get the earned tip are as follows:
Overweight wait staff? -5%
High cut skirt? +5%
Low cut blouse? +5%
Leaning over more than required to get stuff off the table? +5%
Male? Automatic 0%
Before anyone goes all neg happy, it's a ****ing joke. Of course, it would be +10% for a low cut blouse.***Canadian Crew***

I'll repeat this again: Waiters/waitresses are paid the difference in their wages that they don't make in tips by the restaurants meaning they will always make min. wage.
This kills any reason or excuse a waiter/waitress has for complaining. If they do not like doing that particular line of work, they need to find another job.

That's more like it. I responded to your first post which stated, matter of factly, that 20% was standard. Which it isn't. Your amendment above (15%-20% is the general range) is much closer to the truth.
I've traveled extensively and in North America it's generally close to around 15% for most places. Upper class areas or high end restaurants tend to go into the 20s while some places in the world forbid tipping. In certain places, tipping the wait staff is considered an insult to the establishment owner and the wait staff themselves.***Canadian Crew***

That's just stupid. It is their JOB to wait on you and provide a good enough experience that you will return to the establishment and, if they aren't total twats, they'll get a small bonus for their good service.
When I walk into any place to spend my money I expect a certain standard of service whether a tip might be involved or not.***Canadian Crew***
