Lost 17 Pounds in First Month. Is That Bad?

I started hardcore dieting/cardio everyday about a month ago. I've already dropped 17 lbs in my first month. I'm 5'10, started at 222 lbs, it's been almost 30 days and I'm at 205. Is it bad to lose this much weight this quick?

since it's the first month, it isn't too big of a deal.

the first 5-8 pounds was probably water weight. if you lose the same amount next month then you need to be careful.

as long as the next month you're losing no more than around ~2/week, you're not dropping too fast. more than 2/week at your height and weight means you're most likely sacrificing muscle to drop scale weight.

Guys above me are right. It's normal to lose the weight fast that early, but don't get frustrated if you drop to an all time low, wake up the next morning and you're about 6 lbs. heavier. Over the course of 12 weeks for me, that has happened twice. Once I have gotten back down to my all time low, it's just been smooth sailing for about a month and a half before I hit that again.

Good luck and keep at it!

270lbs down to 234lbs (maybe less! didn't weigh this morning)
I only have one life, one body. Now is the time for me to take advantage of it.

When I first started the same thing happened to me. I dropped a lot of weight the first month and then my body adjusted to my eating and workout habits. From that point I averaged a pound to a 1 1/2 per week. I'm at the point now where for every pound of fat I drop, I add a 1/2 pound of muscle.
Just make sure you're going about dropping the weight the healthy way and you'll be good.

First month is a large amount of water weight, like previously stated. If you're losing anything over about 12-14 lbs a month you start getting into an unhealthy area. You will start losing muscle rather than fat. But the key is to make sure you a decent amount of calories, and make it a clean diet.

I lost too much weight too quickly, and lost muscle, and looked very unhealthy. So take it from me, tread lightly with large cuts in weight. But so far I think you're ok! And best of luck!

Congrats man! I know how it feels to drop lots of weight fast, I went from 204 to 189 in three weeks. After 2-3 days of normal eating I gained back the water weight which was only 5 pounds for me. My strength and muscle volume remained the same and melted a total of 10 lbs of fat within those 3 weeks. I was on an EC stack, whether it contributed to fat loss, I dont know, but it did keep my appetite in check. Keep up the good work!
*edit* Everyone's body is different man. Some people say 2 pounds max, but where the hell did this number come from? lol, just do your best

My diet needs working on... I'm in college so it's hard to have a good eating schedule, yet when I eat I do eat healthy. For instance yesterday I ate a chicken ceaser salad at 4 pm and ate an apple and banana at 9pm after workout. I really dont think about eating with how busy I am. My average day usually consists of oatmeal in the morning if i wake up in time around 7:30, for lunch i'll usually have a small grilled chicken, green beens or another green, and a fruit or two such as an apple orange or banana. And then for dinner I dont each much, it's usually my smallest meal of the day and its similar to lunch. My workouts are pure cardio. Everytime I run I dont feel like I got the best workout but most of the time I'll play intense games of racquetball for about 1.5-2 hours, I've never sweat harder in my life than when I play... So usually my workout is a few hours of racquetball. All I'm trying to do is cut cut cut right now.

First of all the 2lb/week rule is BS. With that being said everyone is different and everyone's body reacts different to diet and excercise. Just keep working hard and keep hitting the weights and don't worry about the scale. The most important thing is the mirror.

You can lose more than that and not get into an unhealthy zone. Yes there will be some muscle loss but it will be minimal if your diet's in check. Keep your protein high as in 1.5-2.0g/lb of bodyweight and you will be just fine.

Don't let it go to your head. When your start losing weight, you'll lose more than the average weight. 4lbs/month. Mostly toxin's etc. Slow the fat burning down. create a lifestyle.

It's fine. I lost 34 in my first month with dieting, exercise, and a multivitamin. But my workout regimen was crazy.
