how many CARBS a day are needed?

When building mass, how many carbs should you consum? I read some where 3-5 grams per pound of body weight! Im 200lbs, so that would be 600g of carbs!!!!!

Can you gain mass without alot of carbs? Just high protein and fat?

Generally 1 gram per pound per day is enough to maintain full glycogen levels for an average lifter, a 200 pound man would require 200 grams of carbohydrate. This requirement may increase depending upon the intensity and volume of anaerobic activity, a physical job or high volume of training may see your carbohydrate requirements increase to 1.5 to 2 grams per pound and in some extreme cases even further.

Although technically you require zero carbohydrate to survive, the amount required to maintain optimal anaerobic performance usually lies somewhere between 1-3 grams per pound per day.

Where did you get these numbers? 1g for the average lifter? From all the numbers I've seen, the brain alone needs over 100g a day for proper full functioning ability. That would leave very little for the rest of the body functions, including lifting. If you have sources for this, post them up. Please don't do the "I heard it from a guy who heard it from...." either.

Well, you need 1g of protein per lb for bulking and you should get at least 65g of healthy fats. Protein and fats are more important, so just fill in the rest of your calories with carbs and call it good.

So if you want 2400 calories, get about 250g of carbs.

Judging from the covers of countless women's magazines, the two topics most interesting to women are: (1) Why men are all disgusting pigs, and (2) How to attract men.

Something big that a lot of guys do Shain is called carb cycling.

They will cycle their carb macro each day. Kind of like 'keep the body guessing' thing.

Now I am new to cycling/bulking stuff and still learning, but I've seen stuff like

    High days 1.5-2g/per lb weight
Med day 1g per pound lb weight
    low day (rest day) <75

Thats pretty generalized though so don't take it literally. Also, I believe you don't technically 'need' carbs, protein and fat are whats vital for living (hence why a lot of people do keto diets). I personally could NEVER go no carbs. Period. I enjoy my fruits too much.
Go ahead, make fun of me being a light weight! I like me, that's all that matters.

    - Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage, and confidence. -Og Mandino

It differs for everybody. Whilst some may need 200g (for example) a day, another bb'er will need 600g+ (like you alluded to yourself). Likewise goes for carbs, fat, supplement intake, everything.

As long as you track your progress, and re-adjust according to how you look and how you feel during training etc. then you're good to go.

Pay very little attention to absolutes and concrete statements in general. Not everybody functions the same and gets the same results off of things. Do what you yourself gotta do, and thus worry only about yourself.

Personally speaking if you wanted info on what i do, i cycle my carbs usually. I don't do the whole "bulk", "cut" thing. I try to gain muscle whilst minimising/lowering body fat gain 24/7/365. My high days are 500g, moderate's 250g, and low 100g. Again, numbers will differ for all as everything is relative to the said person in question.

I love carbs, they give me my energy. If you want to restrict them, try some number of grams and each week or day back off a little and see how you feel.

Tweaking your diet slowly and noting results can help you perfect it, it does take some time however.

Whoever told you 600g is on crack. 537.34 tops, but be sure to subtract fiber divided by Pi, then multiplied by the difference in circumference between your ankle and your wrist.

According to a sports nutrition guide I've read, carbs should make up about 60% of your food intake when trying to put on muscle. I'm personally doing 50%. Google books, "the complete guide to sports nutrition"

    Good luck!

haha ok...well the carbs are for energy to help with the heavy lifting in the gym. But yeah I guess there could be people out there that can get energy from other sources.

carbs are 35% of my intake and they range from 240-260g.. i noticed better gains and energy when i increased my carb intake from 18 to 30 then even more so when i raised them to 35... All bodies are different and whatever works for you might not work for someone else... Trial and error is what i suggest
