Deadlifts or squatting which one is better for sprinting and vertical jump. If you had to do one of these exercises what would it be and why.

This was discussed in a thread about athletes deadlifting!
but basically if you can master the technique and not let the heavy weight alter your technique then they are both very benifitial and should be alternated throughout your program!
but if you dont have proper technique and dont want to learn, then squats alone will help build ur vert very well! squats are easier to learn proper technique so if i had to pick just one for a novice lifter, i say... What the posters said above are all true, it is best to do both if you have the correct technique down. They are both very beneficial.
In my case, I stick to Squats and Stiff Leg deadlifts....I am really not confortable with conventional deadlifts. I am starting to do them REAL light, just to get the correct form down.

I believe that you do both. They are both olympic style lits and would be very beneficial to improving speed and verticals. With every lift that you do, you have to pay particular attention to form due to risk of injury. With these exercises (particularly squats) if you want to work on improving your speed and veritcal, do explosive repetitions. Speed is an explosive movement. If you work on starting out with lighter weight, paying close attention to form, and exploding up with your legs, then you should see particular benefits in both.

This .... if you have to pick one its squats .... also deadlifts will burnout your CNS faster with heavier weights because it does use so many muscles. Also, DL is harder on your back whereas you can squat 2x per week and be ok. Really no reason to at least not mix DL in every once in a while .... remember squat will raise your DL too ... I use SLDL in combination with my squat so basically I am still deadlifting.

Yeah I said that about the DL and the CNS .... they definitely both tax the CNS since thats how you get stronger .... but the DL will tax it much quicker again because it uses more muscles.
Idk about the hams stronger than quads ..... the hams are roughly 2/3 the size of the quads so thats pretty hard if not impossible to make them stronger.=============================================
