W talking one mile or consecutive miles?

0ne 7 minute mile is an average speed, if you can maintain a 7 minute mile pace for say 4-5 miles, I would say you are above average.

My one mile time is around 5:45, my 4 mile time is about 28-29 minutes.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

mid to high 4 minute miles are good, if you go below 4 minutes or even close to it your among the best in the world. (from a competitive view point)

and what does shin splints have to do with distance running? ice, heat massage, ice/ heat (repeat constrasts) finish with heat and massage and then one finally icing to get rid of them and trying new shoes or looking into orthotics could help

for a fun runner not wearing spikes...theyre not a big deal...he's young he can deal with the pain until he does whatever needed to make them better. shin splints really just a nuisance.

i just said what i meant wrong, i meant, what does shin splints have to do with how good your time is....wouldn't make a significant difference in his time even if they did cause him to slow down slight bit

7 min mile was what it took to test out of PE back in highschool, so i would say it would be right at the average of a person in decent shape.

For reference ive ran a 5:13 at 155 lbs and when i was at 200lbs i could barely squeeze in at under 7 minutes.

Almost mirrors my times. Senior in HS at 162 lbs I ran the mile in 5:18, and I can do it right now at 221 lbs about 6:40, perhaps 20 seconds faster w/my gears turned up.

Yes, its super. You can say you run a mile in 2 minutes and 3/4 of the people here will say they run it faster. Take it for what it is.

The average joe runs a mile in 9-10 minutes if at all.

    Try this

If shin splits are causing you that much pain when running try a different cardio workout. The eliptical works for me. Either that or just suck it up. 7 minute mile is average if you are running for distance, but if you are only running a mile push your bosy to the limits. Try interval training.

secondly. one of the guys in my platoon can run it in 16.50 (3 miles). just sayin.
That is a very solid time.

The best I ever managed was 17:00 for a 5k (3.1 miles). I did it on two occasions in high school. Both times, I could see the clock ticking from a ways a way and tried to get in under 17:00. It never happened.

As far as a single mile, I managed a 4:54 mile in high school (weighed about 130) and last summer I ran a mile just to see what my time would be and it sucked! I ran a 7:16.

OP: In reality, though, a 7-minute mile is a good mile time. When I ran, it was for high school track. For general fitness, it's a respectable mile. It's averaging just over 8.5 m.p.h. for an entire mile. The average adult male walks at approximately 3 m.p.h. Sounds easy, but it really is not.

Actually their requirements are not that stringent. I think 28 is the upper limit for young recruits.
