should I get a better belt?

I use a crappy belt my friend gave to me, should I add a new belt to my Christmas list? Does it actually make a difference between a quality belt and not so good?

Belts are cheating. I saw a guy drape his belt over the bar and walk away. Not only did the belt squat the weight for him, but it was 2 inches high and still got passed.

phrases like this are slowly turning this forum into the nutrition forums, where only the regulars stay around to make sure no one new dares come in. let me ask, what would you respond legitimately to?

    Twinkies.
    Cash.
    Hookers and blow.

Let's face it: a whole lot of the crap answers come from crap questions, that are either prima facie ridiculous, or are the direct result of not reading the stickies or doing a simple search first. Forums are no longer new technology. Gone are the days where you had to wait for the monthly or weekly FAQ posting on a Usenet newsgroup. I think a good decade or so of consistent exposure is plenty long enough to expect people to get the hang of forum basics.

Take the OP's question. It is, paraphrased: "My belt is crap. Should I get a better one?" with no further details. My original response is about as polite as it's going to get with that kind of question, and also happens to be a valid answer. So are "No." and "Maybe." The truth of the matter is, the OP himself said his belt was crappy. Unless he has some really strong emotional attachment to the belt, or some really powerful reason to keep using a crappy belt, why wouldn't he get a better one?

Then again, why would he ask a bunch of strangers, in public, such an asinine question to begin with?

What's next, "This flame is burning my skin. Should I pull my hand out of the fire?" ?

What kind of belt was it and what kind of new belt do you want? Make sure you get an actual powerlifting 13mm belt. It does wonders for stability.
I used to use a scheik velcro one. Damn thing blew open on me when I was on my heavy set. Almost crapped my pants.

Yes, one of the best things I have ever done for my squat and deadlift was get a quality belt. This was because Newbtime (RIP) told me to.

I dunno if banned ppl can still lurk to see this but.. I see your point, it does get a little snarky in here. I also admit that I contribute to it. However, before I posted a single thing on this board I lurked for a while, and I read the stickies. I didnt even dare post in the fam thread until I had a meet lined up. Alot of people ask questions they answer in the OP post. Alot of people come here and asume because we lift heavy weights that qualifies us to answer religious, medical, familiy, and life questions. I think more often then not the people that hang around a bit, then ask questions find the answers they need.

Pretty much this. It seems people refuse to use google and just spew BS questions in this section. I'm not saying I didn't make some stupid threads when I first started lurking in here, but there are seriously a thousand belt threads.

I don't mind the questions...even the apparently dumb ones. What happens most of the time though is people post without thinking the ?'s through. You couple that with most of the regulars retarded interweb personalities and you get what you get LOL!

NOTE: Retarded comment not directed at anyone in particular....

And to the comment about this section becoming like the Nutrition section....this section is like sunshine and cupcakes for the most part

EDIT: I also realize that until I've done 45 competitions and have rep power of 1 billion my opinion is not valid to most. Without the stupid questions some of you wouldn't have anything else to do with your day....my self included

I think this is 100% true. We need to make a big effort to cut some people some slack, if we only had threads that weren't easily searchable reposts, we'd have
    1- fam thread
    2- meet reports
    3- locked threads

If we really were to just actually answer every dumb question in the first post, the thread would die and not take up space

Plus it wasn't bashing the OP. It was just a post trying to be funny. We need these posts as well as the helpful posts. Otherwise we would have the circle jerk thread and a chit ton of annoying and boring threads that could easily have been answered through many other means. There must be a balance of mockery and assistance. After all the inerwebz is cerealbusiness.gif

I'm willing to do an experiment, but odds are that most of them will turn into the OP arguing against the advice...y'know like they always used to?
