Question L-ARGININE: Best time to take it?

I've been training for 3 years now and JUST started taking L-ARGININE this past week. I'm not exactly sure when is the best time to take it; the directions on the bottle state to take it 1-3 times a day but other then that it doesn't state when and how: before breakfast, after workout etc.

My thoughts are that I would take one pill in morning before eating, one pill right after working out and another pill before bedtime. It also wouldn't surprise me if it didn't make much difference just as long as I'm getting it in.
I starting working out to freaking save my life... was pushing 260 pds and probably 30% body fat. After 2 years of training it became an obsession. I love the feeling of being healthy, also don't mind the looks I get now either from other people.... drives my wife nuts though lol. *edit* I think this post is now going into my sig!!
But with that said though I'm curious as to why you suggest that I don't spend money on it... are you basically saying L-ARGININE is a waste of time and is a product that doesn't work?? When it comes to the supps side of training I'm a novice at best so I'm still learning about certain supps... like L-ARGININE.

L-arginine is sold for its vasodilating effects or it's ability to produce the "pump" due to better blood flow. There are better products out there. I would also try to get my hands on some Agmatine if I were you. I really like Pre Workout products that combine Citrulline with Agmatine. Killer pump!

Since you already have the arginine I would take it about 15-30 minutes pre workout. It also wouldn't hurt to take a dose in the morning or before bed especially if you are getting it for FREE!!!

L-citrulline @ 3g or Citrulline Malate @ 6-9g would be something to replace your arginine

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19276857

PURPOSE:
L-arginine, the precursor to nitric oxide (NO), has been shown to improve endothelial function in patients with endothelial dysfunction. Resistance exercise has been shown to increase arterial stiffness acutely with no definitive cause. It is possible that a reduction in NO bioavailability is responsible for this. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of acute L-arginine supplementation and resistance exercise on arterial function.
METHODS:
Eighteen (N = 18) young men (24.2 +/- 0.7 yr) volunteered for this study. In a crossover design, subjects underwent body composition testing, 1-repetition maximum testing for the bench press and the biceps curls and performed two acute bouts of resistance exercise in which they consumed either placebo or 7 g L-arginine before each resistance exercise bout. Anthropometric measures, augmentation index (AIx), arterial stiffness, and forearm blood flow (FBF) were assessed before and after each treatment condition.
RESULTS:
There were significant (P < 0.05) time effects after the resistance exercise; there was a reduction in brachial stiffness (P = 0.0001), an increase in central aortic stiffness (P = 0.004), an increase in AIx (P = 0.023), an increase in FBF (P = 0.000), and an increase in arm circumference (P = 0.0001) after exercise.
CONCLUSIONS:
The increase in central arterial stiffness and wave reflection was not attenuated by acute supplementation with L-arginine; furthermore, blood flow was not augmented with supplementation. On the basis of these data, l-arginine does not appear to change the hemodynamic and vascular responses to resistance exercise.

I totally understand this; however, this does not make my original post “completely false”. I was agreeing with the post above that states to dump the arginine for citrulline because it is a much better product. When I said it is sold, I meant marketed for this purpose (vasodilation). That does not mean that I believe it is an awesome vasodilator. The OP stated he had received the arginine for free, so I was just suggesting a way for him to take a product that he already has. If he wants, he can throw it away, but if he decides to take it, I was giving my recommendation on dosing.

I agree that Citrulline/Citrulline Malate gives me much better pumps, as does Agmatine.

There are studies out there backing as well as discounting just about every dietary supplement in existence. I read the studies, but I use my own experience to guide my way. I like Agmatine and Citrulline products, not because a guy who was probably paid by this company or that company told me it was good stuff, but because I have tried several products with these two ingredients, and they caused me to have better training sessions.

Thanks for the data!
