How are actors able to put on muscle mass so quickly for movie roles?

How are actors able to put on muscle mass so quickly for movie roles? I always found this interesting. The rest of us take months to years to put on mass that they seem to be able to do within a short period of time.

    EX:

Jamie Fox - Any Given Sunday
Christian Bale - Batman, Dark Knight
    Will Smith

How are these guys able to add 20-30-40lbs of muscle so quickly?

None of them had alot of mass so to speak breh. Yes they were big but as far as I can tell they were not that small to begin with. Their low bodyfat% also makes them look bigger too. Add in what you can do with lighting and camera angles and you can make someone 180 look 220
You would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.

    This.

Bodybuilding is about creating illusions. You can take a 220lb muscular person and with the right approach make him appear to be fat and/or smaller. On the other hand you can take a 160lb person and make him appear to have lower bf% and much more mass.

Please stop saying genetics every time something like this comes up, they're likely not a factor for actors (unless it's genetic acting ability) unless the actor got his start based on already being muscular, in which case they wouldn't be gaining noticably for a movie at all.

so ur saying if evryone had personal trainer, nutritinost and good food, theyd be able to pack on tons of muscles in just a few months? i dont buy it. while i agree the mayority of ppl working out are copmletely lost and hopeless, a bunch of us here are VERY knowldegeble when it comes to training and nutrition, far more than personal trainers. yet we dont explode in muscles in a few months time.

the answer ur looking for is : make up, lighting, camera work, clothing, hard work & dedication, and i wouldn be surprised if a few of them did steroid.

To the people who say nutritionists and PTs, I call BS. There are people on these boards ( a few) that have the impeccable training/nutrition regimens and can't put on "muscle" as fast as these movie stars appear to. It all comes down to how they want you to perceive it.

I def agree with the 'perception' approach. Some of these movie guys aren't even that big, they're just bigger than the avg joe in the street. They aren't ripplingly jacked like germi for example.

however, some do put in the work. Eg will smith for Ali. "Will Smith went with option B for his role as Muhammad Ali, putting in six hour shifts at the gym, six days a week for nine months with ex-boxer Darrell Foster. In WBA terms, Smith's increase in muscle mass was the equivalent of two weight brackets."

Im also guessing a lot of actors rely on sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (eg sh*t loads of press ups every day) to get that bigger look a bit quicker.

Trust me, if you had a role coming up for millions of dollars. You would have the best supplements, weight training regime, dietitians, physios, chefs, all helping you out. With these factors alone and a good few months to prepare anyone can make huge adjustments in their physique.

+ Obvious lighting techniques help a lot too, + spray tan.

    Actually... this.

People don't realize that when they want to train for a role, they train professionally. It's not like Joe Blow on this forum who goes to the gym 3 times a week doing Rippletoads. They are in effect professional bodybuilders because that IS their job.

We've heard of actors growing their hair out, becoming anorexic, immersing themselves in a culture, picking up accents, all to prepare themselves for a role. Why do you think if they had 24/7 for months in advance of a role to prepare with the best assistance $ can buy that it would be mostly camera illusions? It's their job, people.

Besides, most of them have their careers to some extent based on looking good (because that's what sells) so it's not like they're slobs off camera.

i remember reading an article about this that claimed to have some kind of informant who dealt with the stars, but apparently they (and i cant remember who was but christian bale was one of them) do small cycles of steroids, which to me is pretty believable i mean these guys have enough money to have the best chefs, best personal trainers, the best of everything, so just inject when you are told to or pop a pill, eat what you are told and lift when you are told and there u go.

Well said. Its not like these guys are beginners; they know what they are doing and or have people around them that know what they are doing. And they are never actually starting from scratch; since their jobs depend on in it they are never completely out of shape. On their worst days most of these guys are still in better shape most of the population.

Perfect nutrition, perfect training and every picture you get to see will be selected because it is flattering to the actor. They also have more time than it seems to get into shape because they'll get the role long before we know about it.

Also, think about when you take photos of your progress to put on here -I bet you spend a while getting the best lighting and angles you can.
Imagine what big money cameras and lighting, not to mention computors can achieve.

however, some do put in the work.

Since when were 6 hours shifts at the gym conducive to muscle growth?

Oh yeah I forgot that you can only train 45 minutes or you'll overtrain

Its a well established fact that there will be zero muscle growth and in fact you will lose all your jacked fibraz if you train for more than a couple of hours

I doubt he actually spent 6 hours straight in the gym evey time. In all probability this time included learning boxing techniques and ali's style/mannerisms/moves etc

I would think it's a combination of finding everything around you ready (with regards to meals, workout routines, help, support etc), working hard (after all, you're being paid to do so), and camera lights/angles and other movie tricks.

Good points, imho. Competition among actors has to be insane, so we're talking about extremely motivated people at the top.

I agree. With actors, it's probably not genetics. If every layman just had to workout and eat right without the worry of money or other things, then I'm sure we'd all be able to look pretty good.

I've read articles like this as well. The one that comes to mind is Brad Pitt using Winstrol to prepare for his role in Fight Club.
