balancing cholesterol intake and synthesis
I really enjoyed the article. However, I did have a question about the part that said if you consume cholesterol your liver stops synthesizing it. Is this true no matter how much cholesterol you take in? Also, do you have any scholarly references regarding that subject.
I have always understood that it was good to eat cholesterol-laden foods, but I'm confused about how much. I have heard 300 mg/day? I also understood that it was good as long as you weren't overdooing the saturated fats. While necessary, they need to be moderated right? What percentage of total fats consumed should be saturated fats?

Finally, a nutrition writer with a brain...
It's great to read an article like this. So many of the nutrition articles on bodybuilding.com spread the bull**** low-fat diet myth.
I ate a lowfat diet for over 20 years of my life and just kept getting fatter and fatter!
Low fat is a lie. I mix my whey protein with whole milk now and I fry up my farm raised eggs (high in omega 3's). I top it off with at least 15 grams a day of fish oil (including 3 grams of cod liver oil). Add to it at least a gallon a day of an iced blend of green, white, and black teas, and I feel like I have a fairly healthy diet.
I also try to eat at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables. Now if only my wife would stop bringing home doritos and candy!

It is really hard to swallow such a conspiracy theory as drug companies buying up medical colleges. It would mean many government, media, and corporate authority agencies are "in" on the deception...it would mean that they are willing to dramatically shorten our lives (kill us) for profit. It would mean not only couldn't we trust our government, we would have to overthow it.
That is a lot to swallow.
Even if you do believe it...how can you compete with the monstrous media that perpetuates such lies? How can you organize against such organizations?
No. Though our lives are probably halved by bad diet misinformation, we live really well here in the USA. Better to let everyone (except you) live a good short life, than try to change things. Isn't it?

Hmm I eat four eggs and a package of oatmeal every morning. I cook my eggs in olive oil. Is heating up the olive oil bad?

Better to use butter than either olive oil or margarine for cooking.

Dont take Ron Koloff's words too seriously
look at the article. VERY sketchy sources(I have a feeling he made up some)..good goodness Indian Joe, a guy named Indian Joe is part of this tripe. Was Indian Joe ever real...?
Secondly he goes on and on and on like a madman. He even brings the bible into this.
He says this:
"In Galatians 5:20 it states that it is a sin to use Pharmacia. Pharmacia comes from the Greek word, which means spiritism, sorcery, witchcraft, poison, and drudgery."
So what is he a christian scientist?? What no medicine what so ever?
and so according to him CHOLESTERAL has NO bad benefits what so ever?? None at all??
Hey if "Indian Joe" can live to the age of 115...HE MUST BE RIGHT!!!!!

"Then I found out that her son was on Ritalin. Ritalin is a Class II addictive drug that cannot be distinguished by chemists from cocaine, Prozac, and Zoloft."
LIE. The effects of it as shown on a brain scan are similar but any chemist could tell the difference. Indeed...that is how they manufacture it.
And Prozac and Zoloft affect the brain very differently...as they are SSRI's.
Furthermore, no real evidence is given to support the "Protein is primary" argument. I like the gist of the article but its scientific and even opinion value is minimal at best.

Where are the references to scientific literature??
He gives credit to "Eidiner" as a brilliant biochemist, but he has not published any articles listed on PubMed...
Where is the evidence for these conclusions?

great article
Great article about cholesterol, it amazes me how little doctors actually know about health and it's hard to believe that this cholesterol scam is just the beginning of lies the public are being fed by doctors and drug companies

Another great classic by the "scientist" which already brought to the world such gems of medieval wisdom as:
Quote:
|
Maggots are mutations created from rotting food.
|
Quote:
|
Leftover food will rot in your stomach.
|
Quote:
|
The stomach is only capable of digesting ½ of the protein and ½ the starch you eat. Well, what then happens to all the other food not digested? The other ½ of the protein will putrefy and the starch will ferment.
|
Quote:
|
Your food rots - creating bugs, worms, parasites, and yeast - causing illness further down the road. One of the things that this rotting food does to your stomach is cause a horrible acid, very different from hydrochloric acid. It is an acid caused by fermentation and putrification and it can burn your esophagus.
|
Quote:
|
All natural foods are electrical and all of the processed and refined foods are dead foods because the minerals have been removed during processing.
|
Quote:
|
when we look at history we see that the most knowledgeable people concerning nutrition were the Orientals. 5000 years ago they knew that the earth was encircled by meridian lines (electricity).
|
This is now increased in this article by new gems such as:
Quote:
|
If you get rid of the yolk of an egg and, swallow only the white, the body cannot utilize it as protein; it is converted into sugar and stored in the liver as glycogen.
|
The credibility of his writings unfortunately has to be checked against the quality of his previous... contributions.
But sure, to quote "science" of the 1930's, some ill-chosen samples of long-lived people, mixed with some quotes from the bible and hippocrates clearly results in a foundation for sound nutritional/medical advice, whereas all the rest of the scientists in the world must be quacks, involved in the oh-so-great conspiracy against the only man who knows the truth(TM). Or not?
At least we one more learn what the B/S stands for in the "B/S Degree in Nutrition with the Institute of Health Sciences" the author proclaims to have.
Basically, it is a mystery to me how this person is allowed to publish his utter nonsense anywhere outside of tabloids. The only sentence of value in this whole article is:
Quote:
|
I challenge you to research for yourself and find your own truths.
|
Apart from the fact that I never conceived of eskimos as "slim muscular people" (them being "meat eaters" or somesuch), well, anyone doing his own research will find overwhelming statistical evidence for causative connection between lipid ratios and heart disease (see also INTERHEART study).
But the author does seem to have a problem with the concept that there actually exist various types of cholesterol (LDL/HDL, probably a concept to complex for him) - and that they, their effect and roles, are not the same...
Or that the public stance on e.g. eggs has changed for some time now with the improved knowledge of the role of saturated fats (as opposed to ingested cholesterol) on blood cholesterol, where the egg is not so bad. The American Heart Association, which according to the author would be one of the great conspirators, changed it's stance on the egg issue already in 2000, and AFAIK today it's generally accepted that it's not the ingested cholesterol which counts for blood cholesterol ratios and levels (with exception of cholesterol sensitive people) but the saturated fat intake.
Even when looking beyond his ridiculous argumentation or medieval "science", the author is fighting a battle which already was over some 6 years ago. Maybe he should update his knowledge about the perceived position of his "opponents" in the great conspiracy(TM), even if that cannot be found in the writings of hippocrates. Or maybe he should simply learn something about actual biochemistry?

You hit the nail on the head. Good post man.
I feel like articles like this should be removed from the site because it can contaminate the malleable minds of the uninformed. For example, look at how many people have responded positvely to this article.
Don't let others spoon-feed you the information, question it for yourself and question the source of the information. Is there actual scientific evidence (data) to support the conclusions/claims presented in a given article?
Anecdotal evidence, singularities, etc. are not scientific data. In this case, the Bible and Indian Joe may not be accurate sources of information regarding physiology/biochemistry, especially which applies to bodybuilding.
Keep an open mind, but never stop challenging yourself and others. Keep learning.

There were some pretty questionable things, however the majority is all quite plausible.
Just go post in the Keto section and get some responses over there.

This article is pure garbage. I wish that bodybuilding.com would exercise greater discretion on the articles they list on their front page. I don't feel like wasting my time picking the entire article apart...
But for example, on the paragraph of "statin drugs":
Quote:
|
It is documented that the use of Statin drugs lower the brain's ability to function, hence lowering intellect levels.
|
Documented where? I'd like to see a credible peer reviewed study that suggests that.
Quote:
|
Statin drugs destroy Vitamin E and prevent COQ10 from being absorbed by the body. COQ10 and Vitamin E are essential for good and correct heart function.
|
Destroy Vitamin E? I think there may have been one study that showed it slightly decreased Vitamin E levels in children, but it wasn't clinically significant. COQ10 levels are lowered a good bit, that has been proven. It probably isn't of much consequence unless you have serious cardiomyopathy, but that's why they make COQ10 supplements.
Quote:
The Shute Clinic, located in Canada, proved that point 70 years ago however, we dismissed this by commenting,
"Those Canadians are crazy."
|
Ummm...the first statin wasn't marketed in the U.S until 1987.
I can assure you that the entire article is full of misleading excerpts like the above. I especially liked the egg white nonabsorption part. What a tool.

I was going to hold my tongue, but this is the nutrition section's main headline article.
Hey, I really don't feel good about correcting or criticizing something that another person has worked hard on, however this may be an appropriate time to caution others against dogmatically accepting the many assertions throughout.
(I'm wary to accept as truth what has been propagated as such.)
One example:
Quote:

This is not entirely correct. Look it up if you don't believe me. (Though you may have a hard time finding the 10th chapter of Peter.)

The article here ( http://www.jpands.org/vol10no3/colpo.pdf) will enlighten an awful lot of people (including Ron Kosloff, who seems to be under the impression that high cholesterol levels are bad for you).
Oh, and by the way: saturated fat is GOOD for you!

They should remove this...this is by far the worst, most idiotic artical ever.
Egg whites turn to sugar if consumed alone?!?! tell that to ronnie coleman or Bob, or anyother bodybuilder They are living proof that this is not true.
There is so much scientific proof that this artical is pure crap! and the only proof this guy gives is, god would of made it that way, or my pap did this
So the hell what!
Bodybuilding.com usually has very good articals but this one should have never been posted...What a bunch of crap

Some consistency please
I agree with most who have complained about the validity of some of the claims made in this article.
However, what bothers me more is the apathetic attitude bodybuilding.com takes toward the material they publish. The article section of the site really is a free-for-all. Anything goes. There is no consistency.
It would do everyone good to remember, before taking any of these articles to heart, that bodybuilding.com makes money from attracting as many people as possible to the site in hopes that these people will purchase something from the "superstore". Their concern is not validity or accuracy of information published... rather their concern is how to make as much buck as possible.
I wonder how long my reply will remain on the board?

Those bible verses DO NOT EXIST in the context he has written them. I am sure there was good cause here but the only chapters in the bible that states the words "Peter, Kill and Eat" are in Acts 10 and 11 and they don't say ANYTHING CLOSE to what the writer says here.
There is no Peter 10. Neither I Peter nor II Peter have 10 chapters.

Pitiful
I posted a review on another of this author's horrible articles. I feel exactly the same way now: This website loses credibility with every passing article that gets posted without any reasonable internal audit or fact-checking of some sort.
When a site with as much viewership as bb.com gets allows any piece of crap to get posted, and worse...put on the FRONT PAGE, it can cause serious problems.
I can guarantee that some readers will take it as 100% true. Instead of taking the "buyer beware" approach, or even feeling like you can't take everything you read as literal, I would hope that bb.com would have at the very least a panel of respected health professionals that they could forward articles to for review.
Health websites should not allow any Joe Schmo to post articles just because they put flashy pictures, tables and internal links!
The only Thing I have seen worse than Kosloff's stuff was the visit to Kelly Ryan while she was in jail. Trash!
Good supplements, great exercise database...but gotta do better with clearing articles. Get your act together guys!

erroneous! (some of it)
This article had my head spinning! He used so much unjustifiable logic in it it's not even funny. All this article did was make me more interested in finding the REAL answers, he does not cite anything! This article is a politcal rant more than the facts on cholesterol.
He doesn't even stay on topic. He begins to go off about Pharmaceutical co.'s buying schools and christopher columbus enslaving native americans!
For example, these arguments are logical fallacies:
"Today if you tell someone that you eat eggs they think you are going to die."
"As a side note, when my grandfather would go out to plow all day long, my grandmother would pack him lard sandwiches on whole wheat bread. He wasn't a nutritionist, so didn't know that what he was doing was a good thing. However, he did live to be 98 years old and was slender and muscular his entire life. "
"At the end of the 6 weeks I had my cholesterol levels checked and they had actually gone down 5 points. "
"Let's remember that doctors only receive about 30 hours of nutritional education during their entire tenure as a medical student."
"Most people who are Christian have no idea what the bible says"
Don't get me wrong there is some good info in here, but the fact that he uses illogical reasoning makes me question all the good things I got out of this article. Moral of the story, he should fire his editor.
