Lactic acid is not a dead end waste product. There has been a bit of research that has been compiled and the is a mecanism called the "lactate shuttle"
Type IIfibers do produce alot of lactic acid and it is transported to the blood however, it can be takenup by Type I fibers and converted back into pyruvate and then used for energy in the electron transport chain. Which is in fact in use during high intesity work, because there is always oxygen present. Its just that type II fibers have a greater glycolitic capacity.
So your aerobic conditioning comes into play here when you are lifting beleive it or not. Your ablilty to better handle great loads of lactic acid, and there for recover faster between sets and consequently lift more, is dependant on the mitochandria enzymes used in the electron transport chain.
One more reason Bodybuilders should do cardio!
