Do you really think your digestive system needs a break? Yur heart, lungs and brain don't (just to name a few).. And I think you may lose more than a few pounds of muscle if you fast for a whole week wouldn't you?

Muscle loss
Actually, it's not that bad, keeping in mind that the week of fasting includes the phasing-in and phasing-out periods where you eat veggies and grain-products. There's only a few fluid-only days, and I found that regular weight training helps keep the muscle loss limited. Once again, regaining muscle is a heckuvalot easier than building new mass, and I think the benefits you reap from the fast more than make up for the catch-up work you have to do afterwards.
Giving the digestive system a break is more of a fringe benefit, not a major reason in and by itself. Personally, I think it's kind of refreshing, especially as part of the overall cleansing, but that's about it. However, I do give my brain a break once in a while -- I watch South Park! :-)

fasting
I work too hard for the muscle I gain. You said it yourself Matt, How many B/B eat enough fiber? Well I take fiber tabs and process whats in my system quit well with that.
I still think that with a "clean" diet you don't need to flush out anything. If you eat alot of protien(which we all do), the fiber tabs push it out so your not storing it in your intestines.
Whatever works for you....I just disagree with your reasoning if a clean diet is involved.

"I still think that with a "clean" diet you don't need to flush out anything."
Well, I've read a lot on fasting, one because I'm a Christian and fasting is a powerful way to be with God, and two because I believe I should be healthy all the time.
Contrary to what the above quote says, medical sources and research speak the opposite. On the average we all carry 3 to 5 pounds of waste in our intestines. according to Dr. Valerie Saxion, and that's for someone healthy. She recommends fasting one weekend a month to keep your system clean. Also, I've ready testimony upon testimony of people being healed from major diseases, including cancer because they incorporated fasting in their lifestyle. Actually, our body is so masterfully designed that according the research I've read, yes your body begins to feed on itself after a couple days, but your body targets the toxins in your body first before it starts eating the good stuff. Giving your body a "break" is absolutely right according to medical research, and for some it has saved their lives. Fasting can take you to optimum health as it is a powerful tool of detoxification that just eating healthy can not so easily do.
Books on fasting I recommend include:
Valerie Saxion's "How to Feel Great All the Time"
"Fast Your Way to Health" by Lee Bueno (very good)
If you speak Spanish, the most impressive, amazing book I've ever read on all the benefits of fasting is by Dr Jose Ramon Caruci called : "Ayuno: Secreto del crecimiento : Ayuno en las áreas bßblica, médica, de la nutrición y psicológica". He also has a book titled, "Nutrición Y Salud : Principios prácticos para una vida saludable". I'm telling you, if your read spanish get your hands on these books. This man is the Dr.Squat of fasting. Someone that speaks against fasting is unfortunately ignorant on all it's benefits.

Heart rests between beats, lungs rest between breaths, and your brain doesn't function all at the same time, you rest your brain when you sleep/relax.
As for fasting, I don't think it could hurt at all. Over millions of years we have evolved, to be where we are now, I don't know if our evolution took into account we'd be digesting continuously for 20+ hours straight, a nomadic hunter-gatherer would go days without food. Infact Indians were reported to have almost super-human functional strength, and they would go days without food also, following the migration patterns of the buffalo herds. They would also reportedly live past 100 years old no problem.

I'll let you guys know how it goes
I am 5'8", 21 yrs old, 155-160 pounds. I am strong and muscular, but I do have somewhat of a gut and I feel I could be a little more chiseled and not so soft-looking.
Today was day-one of my fast. It wasn't so bad:
1.5 Gallons of H20 spread throughout the day
10:30am - Trail mix & a banana
3:30pm - Serving of oatmeal, carrots, red & green peppers, natural peanut butter on a tortilla and some multi-grain crackers. I was still really hungry after I ate this, but I controlled my hunger
7:45pm - I went swimming for about 30min and then ate a clif bar (protein bar)
8:45-10 - I worked out (back and bi's) and then had a banana as a post-snack
We'll see how the next 6 days go. It will definitely be hard, but I think I'll be able to do it. I am fasting because I want to clean my system and start a new diet (I've been eating too many carbs recently)
"Remember, the easy road often becomes hard, and the hard road often becomes easy"
I love challenges...
Peace
