Tim Wescott - Hardcore Gyms - A Thing Of The Past?

Where did the hardcore gyms go? Most people in gyms today don't have a clue what they are trying to accomplish. Follow my rant as I load this up with sarcasm, and if you are one of those with no idea then start learning and train harder!

Thumbs up Re: Hard Core Gyms

Excellent article ! I'am 41 years old have been training since age of 11. The first gym I worked out in was a hardcore gym because thats how they were and I miss them. I have been a trainer for over 11 years as well and these big box frilly gyms have become a breeding ground for unqualified people to work in, such as trainers who don't know there glutes from there elbow sad. I work in a very big corporate gym chain I've seen a front end sales person who could sell lots of memberships and just basically came off the street, maybe he sold cars before but he could sell and 1 year later promoted to Health centre manger...... wow ! As a trainer I did get promoted last year but because my sales numbers weren't high enough I basically got pushed out and now I'am back to being a trainer, but now I can at least try to help people to get in better shape. would like to open a hardcore gym some day.

EXCELLENT article. I've never been to a hardcore gym myself -- I'm only 17, after all (and I've only been into fitness for a couple years) and almost all of the gyms I see are of the type you describe -- but I've talked to a lot of people who have (my brother, in particular). And I train like I'm at one... and for what? To get dirty looks from the guy (well, little girl, if you know what I mean) doing lateral raises with 10 pound dumbbells? Or from the trainer trying to get lucky with the "gym hotties" for getting in his way? (Or, rather, him getting in my way.)

Great Article

I know exactly what you mean. I have been all over the world in some pretty hardcore military base gyms, old stuff, rusty, and nasty. I loved it! I also worked out at a pretty hardcore gym in my town. Unfortunately it partially burned down and was rebuilt into a a fitness center type gym "area".

Remember when the gym was the GYM and not just an "area" of the club? Man, I miss those days of meeting the guys in "the pit" and getting in a good workout together. Great comraderie!

Well, currently it is a fitness center for the masses, and that is what sells. The gym rat side of me wants the hardcore stuff but the business minded side understands the changes. It is a multi-billion dollar industry, so the pressure is on these centers to turn a profit and climb up the ladder.

However, I have a bug in my head to open a hardcore place soon. Maybe it will do well since there aren't anymore around...?
