Whenever I find myself standing at the crossroads, trying to decide if I should fight the good fight, or just let nature take its course and wait until my health fails and my body shuts down, I come to places like this to find some source of inspiration. A good answer to the question "Why should I even keep doing this?"
Thank you so much for providing that answer. Currently, I am 46 years old and at 6'3", I'm weighing in at 364, the last time I actually checked. My waist is still about 48-50", and I still have severe problems with high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I have only recently started back at the gym after not working out for very close to nine months. I was making pretty good progress when I stopped, but several different things happened that caused me to 'hit the wall.'
Now, recently, several OTHER things happened that have affected my life in such a positive way, that I know I can turn things around. My office sponsored a work-at-home program that makes it possible for me to go to the gym on a regular basis. Plus they started ANOTHER program that offers a cash rebate when you sign up for fitness activities and turn in your receipts from classes, gym memberships, etc.
The number of excuses I used to have for not working out and being consistent are dying off one by one. The most realistic and important goal I've set for myself is to be fit and healthy by the time I reach 50 - to be able to get off my CPAP machine, off the BP meds and to finally fit into clothes that make me look like something other than a big clown.
I made a deal with myself some time ago, that if I could do this the right way, I wouldn't have to fall back on the more drastic solution...which is bariatric surgery. Obesity runs in my family - my baby sister had the surgery at age 40, and it saved her life. She lost nearly 200 lbs. when she did it.
I'm glad she did, but I'm hoping I won't have to do the same. Now that I've read your story, getting back on track and doing this thing doesn't seem quite as impossible as it did before.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It's really made a difference for me.
