Derek, I remeber awhile back you used dextrose and then oatmeal with your post-workout meal. In your current diet, with the absense of carbs around your workout time won't your body use a good bit of your Xtend/Substance drink to replenish glycogen levels via gluconeogenesis?

Some no doubt, as with the Glutamine.

I understand that you get greater caloric expenditure when using AA for glycogen replenishment, but your strategy would surely put a dent in my wallet for something a little dextrose could do

BCAA and dextrose CANNOT be compared at all. BCAA regulate protein synthesis along with multiple other metabolic effects. I do not use Xtend to replenish glycogen, I use it for its anabolic/anti-catabolic effects.

I agree completely that BCAA are way more important for protein synthesis, I was talking strictly about glycogen replenishment.
You get your BCAA for free, so if some get turned into glycogen then so be it. It just seems like wasted BCAA intake if some get used up for other purposes.
You don't use it primarily for glycogen replenishment but no doubt some gets used for that purpose in the absense of carbs. I can't afford to take boatloads of BCAA only to have some of them be turned into glycogen when dextrose or another carb could fit that bill.
Thanks for your time in replying Derek

If you are bulking, then I would most certainly use dextrose post-workout to replenish glycogen stores. That along with a higher carb intake will keep glycogen levels full. BCAA oxidation increases during exercise and the body must breakdown muscle tissue to acquire these BCAA. By supplementing with exogenous BCAA you spare muscle tissue from being catabolized. The combo of Xtend + Dextrose would work very well to keep your body anabolic.

that makes more sense since you are talking about the difference in off-season vs. contest prep and dextrose intake.
so during your off-season do you lower your fat intake as you raise your carbs? I would think that at 500+g protein and 140+g fat that a high carb intake would be a little overkill calorically speaking.
