Dean Goudie - Fitness Misconceptions: Water Bottles, Sunburn, And More.

The following information is either hard to come by, or word of mouth is incorrect and needs to be corrected. Those subjects I will be touching on are about water bottles, sunburn, tanning, and weight training.

I hope you don't mind a little correction to what otherwise is a gr8 article

It was quite striking to read that you think bodybuilding does not stunt growth! I agree with you that there has been no study relating to the issue, but there is a widely accepted view which states;
1. Weight lifiting causes the release of hormones mainly Testosterone.
2. in children and adolescents growth plates at the end of the long bones are not fuse yet allowing for further growth.
3. and it is common knowledge that high testesterone levels cause the fusion of those groth plates (epyphyses) causing stunted growth or at least speed up this naturaly accuring process.

Hence the general advise is to lift light with a high number of reps until they are 20 or 21 then they can hit the gym hard!
BTW I am studying for a medical degree

Speaking of word of mouth, the whole plastic bottle thing that circulated around the world via email is untrue.

For starters, plastic bottles don't contain vinyl chloride. Second, vinyl chloride is a gas that is hazardous to your health when it is inhaled. Vinyl chloride is used in the manufacture of PVC pipe.....which commonly carries drinking water into homes. Vinyl chloride leaching was only a problem in old PVC pipes made in the 70s....after which tighter manufacturing controls were introduced.

But yes, the biggest health problem with re-using plastic bottles is not washing them out properly between uses (to get rid of bacteria etc). Give them a good clean and let them dry thoroughly and you'll be fine.
