Review: Charles (sword chucks) - No Drinking And Training!
I think that we can all agree that consuming an alcoholic beverage or two prior to hitting the gymn is a bad idea. After readying this article, I would have to say that wearing an MP3 player loaded with Limp Biskit and going to the gymn should also be a no-no.
An issue that I have with this, and the several other articles on bb.com dealing with this topic, is that they never define alcohol consumption. In most cases they confuse alcohol abuse with light or moderate consumption. Is too much of anything (abuse), whether it is alcohol, protein, creatine or caffeine for example, ever a good thing? Will the abuse of any of these things inhibit growth and success in the gymn and\or have an adverse effect on your body? You cannot responsibly equate abuse with responsible use, nor can you equate the effects of each.
From: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Citation
"A review of the literature on the positive benefits of light and moderate alcohol consumption suggests the following: Alcoholic beverages are food, containing approx. 7 calories per gram of ethanol. Beer contains small percentages of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and significant proportions of the recommended daily allowance of trace metals and minerals. Wine, while possessing significantly smaller amounts of vitamins and minerals than beer, has considerably more iron. Both beer and wine have a favorable potassium to sodium ratio. Coronary heart disease (CHD) seems to have a negative association with regular alcoholic beverage use. While some report a linear relationship, most studies agree that the relationship is U-shaped. Many studies have suggested that this inverse relationship is due to alcohol's effect of increasing levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), which acts in the removal of cholesterol from tissue. Other explanations for moderate alcohol's cardioprotective effect include: associated diet changes in moderate drinkers, the silicon content in wine and beer, decreased platelet aggregation and coagulation, and the ability to lessen stress and/or alter personality patterns associated with CHD risks. Dry non-sweet wines and diluted distilled spirits have been recommended in the treatment of diabetes. It has been suggested that alcohol may improve glucose tolerance and blood glucose response to ingested carbohydrates. Due to reported decreased HDL values in diabetics, alcohol has been suggested as useful for its HDL-increasing function."
From: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...str&query_hl=2
"Published health benefits of regular light-to-moderate alcohol consumption include lower myocardial infarction rates, reduced heart failure rates, reduced risk of ischemic stroke, lower risk for dementia, decreased risk of diabetes and reduced risk of osteoporosis. Numerous complimentary biochemical changes have been identified that explain the beneficial effects of moderate alcohol consumption."
Once again we are talking about responsible, moderate consumption of alcohol, and not abuse. Unfortunatly, this and other articles choose to put any consumption of alcohol into the abuse category, which is a disservice to those seeking reliable information on the subjet inorder to make an informed descision.

good read
i'm somewhat of a newbie, but since I got serious about bulking, i found that beer got in the way. I never realized how many I downed a week previously(hey, they were only light, right?). They say you cant stop bad habits, only replace them w/ good ones. I used to crave beer after work, but after 3-4 meals and slamming a protein shake after work, the last thing I want is the taste of beer. Ever notice however, you can eat so clean w/ no urges for some time, then one stinkin beer and youre ravenous for chips and junk. Having said all that i'm takin the family up to my old man's cottage this weekend and I'm gonna get ****faced!

Gave it up 6 years ago!
Thanks for the article and the positive support for abstinence. Until I quit myself, I never knew anyone who didn't drink. Now, I hardly know anyone who still drinks. I haven't had a cold or been sick in over 5 years, and saved a bunch of money. The best part is I don't do stupid stuff (that seems so funny or great at the time but the next morning you realize is pretty silly). My kids can't remember seeing me drink, and neither one of them partake now, which I hope is a tribute to the example I set. As for training, I get to bed at a reasonable time each night and wake up feeling refreshed and eager to exercise. I have a clear head when I work out, and can push myself without having to nurse a hangover. Give it up for a year and see if it doesn't make a difference in your life.

Extra motivation
After working an exhausting day or taking care of my children, working out feels like the last thing I want to do. I often find that a light beer is just the thing to get me into the mood to workout. I often have what I call a "beer window" right after work where if I drink a beer, I will get up and be active, and if I don't, I am unable to motivate myself to get anything productive done for the rest of the evening, including exercise. It's not an everyday feeling, but it happens regularly.
While I agree that under ideal circumstances, alcohol probably lowers performance, but for many of us in the normal world, I think one cannot call absolutes here. Not everyone staggers around confused and knocking things over after having a few drinks. Some of us may even use the extra energy and feelings of well-being positively as motivation to workout, study, or play games with our kids. As others have posted, moderate consumption does not nessesarily create overall negative effects.

Absolutely agree Marwood, thanks for the clarification. It's a choice we each have to make. Like you I enjoyed a few drinks now and again most of my adult life. It was just once I turned 40 I found my performance the next day (and blood pressure) began to suffer.
