actually most studies show that only about 1.5g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight is more than enough to keep an elite athlete in positive nitrogen balance during training. However, increased protein intakes are associated with more muscle growth. So obviously there is more to it than just nitrogen balance.
Plus the methods they use to measure nitrogen balance are quite primitive.
