Curtis Schultz - What Ever Happened to the Good Old Days?
I'm flipping through the yellow pages looking for a place to train, and I come across a Worlds Gym, as I run my finger down the lists of things they have and offer my finger stops in amazement. It reads "No Powerlifters!" I sit in astonishment that this gym owner had the balls to put that in writing, and then under the World Gym logo it states, "We'll take care of everything you need to know & teach you everything you need to do from the first time you walk through the doors."

Agree,
I'm only 18 but i'm sick of only having one squat rack in my entire gym. No powerrack either. Very angry when someone is curling in the one squat rack. I look back at Draper, Arnold, Sergio, and all the Ironagers and just want it. Bad!

Good old days
I couldn't agree more.I worked at Golds in Sunrise, fla when the "suits" showed up .The money wasn't in these muscleheads they said.I worked at another place were my new boss told me straght forward"I'm not really interested in their health-get them in here and signed into a three year contract with electronic money tranfer and the inabilty to quit without a written excuse from a Doctor and we'll get along fine"For five years I put gyms in facilities all over the Northeast and with the few exceptions being College and pro team facilities owners were always telling me "We don't want "lifters" they put people off and drive away the people we're trying to cater to"The family".Dam how I miss the energy of the gyms a few short years ago it made you feel like pushing yourself, now with the sea form green and pastel colors ,easy listening stations...I don't know how 'bout a Ballet class!

The problem is that business owners have to follow the money.
Where I live at least, I don't think that a hardcore gym would generate sufficient cash flow to stay in business.
and discriminating against bb'ers and powerlifters is NOT illegal, don't be silly.

Your article on "powerlifting"
Think you are alittle over the top with your so-called "concerns". I have frequented many "gyms" in this country and have not seen people who powerlift be discriminated against. I lift minimum 5x per week and dont see people who powerlift that much anymore or who really want to either because of body type or machines which offer more safety. But then you also dont see many people who are into "big time body-building" either. I personally think its great seeing people who are working out probably more than ever and think it has alot to do with the variety of equipment, pools and cardio equipment in the gym(s). The television and/or music offered is good and if you dont like it, dont watch the tube, rack in a cd on your player or mp3. Going into the gym and not seeing the idiot, OCD roid driven self-serving clowns like yourelf makes the atmosphere better for those who maybe are just starting and feel awkward with their physique. The gyms are much better now than when you and "honey" were working out. Stop acting like an old- woman get some hair. And discriminating? You got to be kidding. Get a life..

hey you
the biggest problem i see in the gym today is the a-hole personal trainers ripping off fools that think there is some kind of secret to it all. personal trainers and thier yuppie clients are in the way. i still think it's the owner's responsibility to initially show people new to it all the basics and answer questions as they come up....but this personal training (baby sitting) is ****ed up and so are the workouts being sold to their clients, oh well a fool and his money. oh yeah, one more thing, world gym in cleveland ohio is a dump.

I'm pretty young, but I can remember 10, 15 years ago when I would tag along to the gym with my old brother, and it was like going to a sporting event. I'm not a sport fan, but god, going to the gym as a kid was the biggest thrill to me. Now I'm a trainer at Gold's, and I don't think a powerlifter would be kicked out or even given a cold shoulder. But we never see them in there. Instead its packed with the pretty-boys who like to get sweaty. There are some pretty big guys, but they don't have the aura that the powerlifters have.
But then again, do powerlifters really want to go to these mainstream fitness places? I'm by NO means a big guy or a powerlifter, but working out is one of the biggest parts of my life. The gym isn't a place for me to go and socialize. If I didn't work at Gold's, I would do all my workouts on my back porch with galvanized pipes and cinder blocks. I don't want to be around all the yuppies when I workout...

SO true... the pricing is ridiculous considering they don't even analyze your needs half the time, and generally just tell you to do the same things as they tell others to do. Like hmm... let me see, then pull out some papers with the same thing they told the last person. Ridiculous... you'd be much better off sticking to forums for opinions to gather your own general ideas.
