The article is alright except for point no. 1). If you don't eat before you sleep your body will go into a catabolic, muscle wasting state. He should have stated that you should be eating slow digesting proteins e.g. casein (milk, casein protein powder, cottage cheese) and healthy fats to slow down amino acid release into the bloodstream even further, e.g. fish/flax seed oils, at this time.

First off, I'd like to thank you guys for pointing that out about the slow digesting protein and healthy oil to slow things down. You are absolutely right on that and that's my fault for not catching that. I was thinking more along the lines of people who eat too much food before going to sleep and didn't catch the "glitch" in the article. It's something I actually do in my own training (take slow protein before bed).
As far as evidence showing possible insulin reaction to artificial sweeteners, here are the references that I found on the subject on Medline:
1. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...t_uids=2887503
2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...t_uids=2887500
To be clear, I wasn't able to get the full study to review their methodology but the conclusions they draw in the abstract show an indication that aspartame can cause an insulin response when ingested.
Hope this helps!
Nick Nilsson

Agreed....1 and 3 a contradicting.......I think this article needs revamped or at least preferenced......what if you train late at night and then crash? Of course you need a nice sized meal......plus, many of my friends that compete live and die by ol school theory of eating in the middle of the night....plus Cutler and many other pros, they eat, train and sleep all day.......like animals....so, nix #1 and its decent......maybe late night "snacking" on sugar laced foods is a bad idea (your typical american diet of chips, ice cream, etc.) but for me, it's a huge mound of cottage cheese, some roasted peanuts, and a thick shake to wash it down minutes before bed.........at 7% or 11%....doesnt change.

yeah #1 is total bunk. I lost about 50 pounds now and never miss my pre bed snack. The problem most people have is not eating before bed but rather what they eat.
As for #3 Ive read evidence for both sides. But when it comes down to it Diet soda > Regular soda, anyday.
