BOB.. I take extreme offense to this slob being compared to a swimmer.
I was a swimmer while growing up. I swam year round, from age 5 to 16, and again from 18 to a month before my 22nd birthday. Was a highschool All-American, was the Minnesota highschool swimmer of the year my senior year, swam on a full-scholarship in college, set our conference record in my best event (the 100-yd. breastroke, coincidentally), etc.
As a 190-pound swimmer, my physique smoked this clown's fat ass.
I think he'd be more favorably compared to a beer drinking men's leauge softball player.

Kiiinda funny. I just read the article. I have actually met Maris Lee. He competed in the NPC Louisiana with me this past summer. He was in the open lightweight and took second to this 21 year old FREAK of nature who was also in my Organic Chemistry class at LSU. ALSO, Maris trained my uncle John when he use to compete. If you look at the people Maris trained in his original article, John Distefano (my uncle) is one of them. He competed in the Junior USA's twice and won the Mr. Louisiana (NPC Louisiana) obviously to qualify for the Junior USA's. I had read Maris' article before I read Bob's, and I have to agree with Bob that Maris may have gone overboard with the whole NPC being too political. There was nothing political about the competition I competed in. Maris was definitely beaten by that guy; no politics in that. Bob's been around this long enough to know that politics don't play a major role in the NPC. Has it ever played a role at a few competitions? Probably, but I have no proof. And, not to the extent Maris made it seem IMHO. BUT, in Maris' defense, I've met him in person, seen him compete, and he does NOT look as bad as that pic makes him look. Yes, his physique is not that pretty (blocky waist), but he was pretty damn ripped and dry when I saw him. I'm not taking anyone's side; I do agree with Bob that a lot of Maris' article may be him just venting frustration and anger that he wasn't as good as he wanted to be to compete in the NPC, but at the same time, I haven't had Maris' experiences nor have I been to every one of his competitions, so I can't really say if "politics" ever hurt Maris' chances of winning or not. I just figured I'd put my 2 cents in since I've actually met the guy. Of course, Bob obviously knows more about competiting in the NPC than anyone else I can think of, so I'm apt to trust what he says about politics in the NPC. Thanks for the article.

good reply to a bad article. The guy sounded like a broken record. It's very easy to claim "politics" and things like that when you don't have 'it'.
If I were to enter a competition today, I'd do better than that guy did - I'm no where near 'cut' right now (I'm bulking) - all it looks like I'd need is a razor and some self-tan.
Bob rocks!

Is there really any need to tear anyone apart, I agree he is possibly a clown, but with your position in the BB world I personally would have rather seen a contructive reply.
I can see 2 emotion driven articles, there is no winner...
Sorry if you guys find i'm not sucking up to the pros enough like most of you do....

Here are two things I take issue with, addressed at one time:
1. Agreeing with someone isn't 'sucking up'. Famous people and regular Joes CAN have the same opinion!
2. Not everything has to be constructive! The original article was a blast from someone (sure it was emotionally driven - that emotion is envy. The writer of the original article would not be swayed if Bob had gently told him that all of his accusations weren't true, and here's a lollipop for your troubles. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, and when someone attacks a group like the NPC that Bob represents, it becomes less about the ideology and more personal. Take it this way - if someone attacked the members of your family for something that you knew they weren't (let's say someone called your family racist) then I'm sure you would get a little bit defensive, and with good reason.

It's called "dishing it out" and being able to take it....
You wan't to talk smack...expect it back. Guys like Maris don't respond to "logic" and well thought out explanations...if they did, they never would have written that garbage in the first place.
Were not talking about ONE contest placing, were talking YEARS of bitching and complaining....his response certainly warented mine.
Sorry if your "overly sensitive-getting in touch with my feminine side- Oprah watching-self, was offended.

As I previously said, I cannot stress this enough: he does NOT look that bad in real life! I've seen the man. I frickin competed with him! He was dry and lean as hell at the NPC Louisiana last summer. You're making judgements on one picture. Does he look like Bob? Or even how Bob looked when he competed in the NPC? Hell no! lol But he doesn't look as bad as that picture makes him seem.

Hey Tom, my good friend is a professional softball player, and I'm sure he'd take offense to that as he is 5'10", 215, and athletic as hell (he's played pro baseball before at the AA level). He tells me most of the guys he plays with are 300 pound steroid monsters who consistently hit 500 foot bombs. He's trying to get stronger so he can consistently hit bombs as well, but he says he doesn't want to gain too much weight because it will slow him down. Some of these guys actually make good money too. The shortstop on his team makes $60,000 a year, and he says he could too if he could consistently hit bombs.
Anyway, about the article, way to tell it like it is. I was talking to Hugo Rivera the other week. He competing in the middleweight class at the nationals and placed out of the top 15. He didn't cry about it, he accepted it and was talking about how Eric Buiy looked like he weighed 200 pounds and how he'll probably never be able to compare to guys like that. He also has never used any illegal steroids (Marcus Haley accused him of showing up to a gun fight with a switchblade), so he realizes that winning at that level will probably never happen for him no matter how much he busts his ass.
On another note of NPC politics and sour grapes, Hugo was telling me about this one bodybuilder from Tampa who's originally from MA and claims to be pretty good friends with Jay Cutler (I won't mention his name, but maybe you guys might know who he is.) He didn't even place in the top 5 at Nationals the year Tony Freeman won and claims that Tony said he should have placed 2nd (he'll bitch about Dave Palumbo's physique all day long. And Bob, he claims he thinks you're a cool guy, but that he could beat you in competition. Hugo told me that he competed this year and I couldn't believe it because I saw him in September and he didn't look anywhere near in shape. Anyway, he didn't even make the top 15 and Hugo said he came up to him afterwards and was saying: Bro, look at my legs, I should be a pro...there's a conspiracy against me in the NPC...hey don't want me to be a pro...blah, blah, blah. Now quite honestly the guy has pro level legs, and maybe pro level lat width, but he doesn't have pro level anything else, his waist is huge, and I have better traps than him. It's just funny that this guy has no traps, a huge waist, and it out of condition, yet he thinks he should be placing in the top 5 because of his legs, and there's this huge NPC conspiracy against him. Then Hugo tells me he looked like a carrot on stage, and I just started cracking up.

What makes you think he will respond to "smack talking" as you put it so gracefully?
And what honest response are you looking for? You really think you are going to change his mind?
Come on! Be honest Chic...you love this...you love these people stroking that ego..."HEY CHIC! GREAT ARTICLE! WAY TO BLAST HIM!" hahaha
You honestly can't tell me your only intentions were to help Maris see his mistakes...
If so...then parents should start raising their kids like that...Mom and Dad should talk **** back to their kids when they give them lip...great call.
"Hey Dad, your a piece of ****." "Oh yeah, son...well you are a bigger piece of ****." "Wow! Dad you're right. I'm going to go clean my room."
Chic for President...2008. We'll **** talk this world into a peaceful place yet!
