Author Rea - Soy Protein Sucks!
As of late, it seems that I have been getting more and more questions about soy protein and my reasons for suggesting that athletes, and especially male athletes, avoid it like a bad blind date. I would like to offer some insights to this evil...

Every morning I have a bowl of Smart Start, Which would be a soy protein cereal. Are you telling me that I should stop eating It. Or should I keep on eating it.

soy isn't going to hurt you if you don't make a habit of eating lots of it.

Not to oversimplify, but one of the best rules to live by is "Everything in moderation".
I mean, if you overdo anything in life it can become a negative. Foods and diet are TOTALLY in line with that.
Despite what you might read here on the boards, if you had 5g protein/lb bodyweight daily, you'd probably not be feeling that great (and for a lot of us, getting 1000g of protein would be way too many calories).
Maybe it's a KIS mentality, but I believe that having some miso soup isn't gonna counter all of my gains I've made in the gym.
I didn't like this article because it was TOO biased, and some readers take that sort of thing too much to heart and will toss out their soy sauce and Kashi cereal upon reading it.

Everyone is not going to respond the same way for any given food or supplement. When preparing for a show I deliberately avoid soy, fowl and wheat. I noticeably "puff" up a bit and this might be a result of the hormones being pumped into the chicken and turkey. With the soy, I really haven't come to any conclusions yet.

slow down on your conclusions about soy
i have not heard any substantive and verifiable claims that soy is what the author of this thread has purported it to be. i majored in nutritional science, so i'd like to think i have some authority on this issue. i've observed, studied, administered, and participated in more studies on soy than any other food. i cannot elaborate on every detail where i disagree with the author of this article, but i can direct you to what i believe is a powerful rebuttel to all of those negative charges.
here's the link: http://www.foodrevolution.org/what_about_soy.htm
the charges against soy that i heard are all addressed in this article.
and i also want to say that i consume soy in whole food form (not soy isolate or concentrate). i eat 1-2 servings per day of unflavored soymilk, tempeh, or tofu (usually as croutons for my salad). i continue to grow and i'm currently 6' tall, 195 lbs at 8% bodyfat. 2-3 years ago i was 160 lbs. i've consumed soy as a daily protein source ever since. however, my largest portion of protein comes from whey isolate. please read that article before you make your conclusions.

Response to Soy Protein Article
This is a very poorly written article. Read the excerpt below and see if it makes any sense in terms of the premise of the article. Along with numerous spelling errors and poor editing I found it difficult to find credibility with this information.
"As of late, it seems that I have been getting more and more questions about soy protein and my reasons for suggesting that athletes, and especially male athletes, avoid it like a bad blind date. As such, I would like to offer some broader insights upon this evil substance. In truth, with the exception of post-menopausal women, there just is no valid reason to suggest that the evils of soy food or protein use out weight the benefits."

No wonder PETA members look so unhealthy.
Anyways, if used in moderation there shouldn't be any negative affects. Like phospodar said, moderation is the key. To much of anything can cause harm to the human body. Even something as simple as tea can be bad for your teeth or to much farm raised fish can be bad for the body. The list goes on and on. At least I learned something new about soy products.

Soy??
Phosphader is so right!! Through my many years of research studying soy and how it affects the hormones I conclude it is in most womens interest to stay away from it or at least consume in moderation.
And its true there are many food alternatives to soy flour, protein and the like. The biggest way to determine whether or not soy works with your system is to pay close attention to how you feel after soy consumption. Do you feel lethargic, moody, bloated, craving--if so, more than likely its best you replace soy with something else. If you are not recognizing these sort of after effects than i would consume in moderation.
Thats my opinion

Soy et all...
As far as I'm concerned the health-food industry is nothing but a bunch of marketing hooey! I see all these suppliments for sale claiming this or that...its all CRAP! for someone else to prey on the stupidity of others...You want protein...get it from animal sources, you want vitamins, get it from a good multi-vitamin, don't believe half of this crap you read..
