Decent

Decent article, but HIIT is always more beneficial than higher duration cardio. On top of that, fat is a much more efficient energy source, and for those wanting to lose weight carbohydrates are 2nd class to a
high fat/high protein, low carb diet.

Exclamation The BIG picture

It is nice to see that Shannon is advocating real training and diet principles that do not promise any kind of ridiculous results. I commend Shannon for keeping her head above the garbage that is out there promising a perfect body "for 3 equal payments of $19.99!" or whatever.

It seems Shannon has earned her education on this matter through proper academic study, not the latest "Muscle & Fitness" mag. Granted, even being a "Dr." doesn't cut it sometimes. May I suggest certain high-protein / low-carb diets out there that have been authored by one Doctor or another?... Yes, unfortunately even a few of those that have gone through the academic wringer have been lured away by the big money of false promises surrounding diet and exercise. Shannon has taken her academic learnings and presented them in as unbiased a way as possible. (Note: it can be frustrating, but wheteher you like it or not, there is ALWAYS a degree of bias!)

The aforementioned capitalist doctors are able to protect themselves because people on their diets see short-term results... without regard to the long-term (1, 5, 10 years down the road). Furthermore, those diets will often take ONE major scientific fact, remove it from the context of the entire workings of the human body, and build an entire diet around it. For example, I once read about a diet based entirely around eating peanut butter. It claimed that this diet was an excellent diet for your heart because peanut products are full of monounsaturated fat. It IS TRUE that monounsaturated fats have been shown to be beneficial for the heart; the food intake of many caribbean populations are often higher in fat than the food intake of others from around the world, yet these caribbean populations have shown lower incidences of cardiovacular disease.... because their fat intakes are drastically higher in monunsaturated fats, rather than the saturated and poly fats that the rest of the world is high in comsuming (particularly North America!). So, sounds like a good idea, right? WRONG. If you ate ALL that peanut butter, you would be eating SO MUCH SALT that your heart would probably shrivel up in no time at all. Any benefit from the monounsaturated fat would be highly reversed by the high levels of salt. Looking at the WHOLE picture is critical.

I believe that Shannon's approach is healthier than that of some of the other respondants to this site. It seems rather unfortunate that some users have used these boards to supposedly "review" an article, when in fact they are simply selling their own wares.

In fact, in general there are ALOT of people are out there trying to sell a magic pill to the perfect body, which is highly annoying. Just when you want the straight facts, there is somebody right there with something to sell you something to "cure" whatever ails you.

When it comes to health and wellness, we are all in a very scary predicament. It is such a complex issue, with physical, psychological, social, and even socio-economic aspects. As a general population, we are at the mercy of advertisers and big companies who are MORE than happy to give you the information that you so dearly crave... THEIR info that is. It is understandable that people would flock to buy the latest diet, because people ARE concerned about their helath and DO want to do something about it. I commend anybody who has ever pursued a diet because I know that they mean well. Not everyone has the benefit of education to "know any better".

KNOW that anything that feels "too easy" or "not quite right" probably is. Life always has a price to pay, and you are foolish to believe otherwise. A proper diet and exercise program is one that encourages moderate results over a long period of time.

What society is doing to you is out of your control; what YOU CAN do to still live well, though, is ENTIRELY up to you.

Live well.

Thumbs down Yeah

Hey Shannon did you really have to post such a lengthy attempt at spin to add credibility to yourself under an unregistered name? A few unregistered bb.com forum tough guys as usual. This article easily ranks up there among the likes of Ryan Mclane's articles as one of the worst and most useless ever.

Cry more please

Sorry to tell you but you are just dead wrong. HIIT is beneficial for burning calories but you may want to do a little research. HIIT training is anaerobic and only burns those CHO's (that you put down) during workouts. Long moderate- aerobic training uses fat for fuel. If fat is such a good energy source then hiit is not what you should be doing! Your post makes you look very uninformed.
