You ask.......How can Bodybuilding be brought to be more mainstream and then, almost in the same breath you declare that it never will be as long is blatant steroid use by all the competitors.

Did you ever stop for one second to think that not all people (male or female) find large body builders attractive nor can they relate to or realize the amount of time, effort or years of depriving lifestyle it takes to achieve such a physique?

In my opinion, I feel that if a new division was formed that was directed toward the
(six-pack crowd) you would see a whole new resurgence and acceptance toward bodybuilding just as been noticed in womens bodybuilding when they added the new fitness divisions.

Like it or not.......this would make bodybuilding as whole much more accepted.

PERIOD!

Bodybuilding in the Mainstream

After reading your article, I have to agree with you.

There was a time in the '80s when the fitness craze was at it's peak and bodybuilding was riding a wave of acceptance and popularity in the mainstream. It was the dawn of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie "Pumping Iron", and other early bodybuilding stars that made people notice and want to get on the fitness bandwagon.

But now, that momentum stopped, and now it is all headed backwards. Bodybuilding is becoming, if it is not already, a tainted sport. Bodybuilding has become synonymous with steroids/drug abuse, and it is not a mystery to many about the insidious side of bodybuilding.

I hope that it does change.....and one day I think it will. I have always said that the only constant is change, and things in the bodybuilding industry cannot remains the way they are.

It will be a togh road as people have grown to want to see the freaks. I have heard it time and time again the people that want to be "Freaky Huge!". And there is a curiosity and fascination about seeing someone that is inhumanly large. But I would rather not encourage that same "freaky huge" guy to get larger for the sake of my entertainment, all the while destroying his organs, liver, heart. etc etc.

In short, I think that when we all start to admire and give credit to the well rounded, well proportioned drug free physique and compensate fairly those bodybuilders that give it their all in the gym and get to their contest best by their own blood sweat and tears, then bodybuilding will once again become the buzz of the mainstream.
