This article is not intended to dissuade people from using alcohol moderately, for recreational purposes, but will point out, from an athlete and a researchers point of view, its significant shortcomings.

Great article
Fascinating article. I especially liked the part about the explanation of the limbic part of the brain, and how alcohol does not affect this portion of the brain, thereby causing people who imbibe alcohol to use their emotions rather than logic when making decisions. I am an enthusiatic bodybuilder, I am 27 years old, and I drink four to six beers about three times a week. Is this extremely detrimental to my development? Also, should I only abstain from beer? I don't want plan on being a professional bodybuilder, but at the same time I'd like to get "over the hump" in terms of my physique. Any advice would be appreciated.

Great way to the end the article. "So it is probably best to stay away from alcohol completely when training and competing to win. Indeed, the only real way to avoid alcohol's effects is to refrain from its use completely."

To hell with that. Obviously, I say that as a noncompetitive bodybuilder. Actually, I'm reluctant to even say I'm a bodybuilder. I lift twice a week to improve my general body composition and sense of well-being; Mr. Olympia I'll never be.
For competitors, I can see how this is a worthy article. And, quite obviously, alcohol in excess is bad. But I do love my Friday and Saturday night beer drinking. I'll leave you with a quote from Johnny Carson that sums up my feelings on this perfectly:
"I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself."

alcohol is bad
We all know alcohol is bad, well it can temporarily lower your IQ, affect your skin and lead to heart problems. I would recommend everyone to stay off alcohol unless they want to visit a drug and alcohol rehab center !

I used to volunteer for all sort of centers but I've never seen an athelete in a drug rehab treatment center. All people here had diseases, physical or mentally.

hmm
Actually, for some people, they used alcohol as medicine you know, or some just drink to make them sleep. Bodybuilding and Alcohol maybe could be mixed, because not all the time alcohol is bad to the body, it is bad when it is over, when you drink much. That is the time that alcohol may have bad effects on your body.

Re:
I used to drink heavily on party nights too, until a couple weeks ago when I realized just how much getting drunk was hurting my gains. I'm hoping that after you've read this post, for those of you that drink, you will see just how detrimental alcohol is to building muscle and hopefully cut down on drinking.

why? just asking for a scientific or statistical standpoint. Seems it wouldn't matter, pending on when you drink it and how much. i'd think it'd help if you drink it before stretching or light exercise and drink plenty of water during.
