Talk about mind over matter... I am sort of new to weight training, but I learned the lesson that this article teaches through experience the other day when I selected a pair of 45 lb. dumbells for my last exercise of the workout, dumbell bench press (I had already done pec fly, incline bench, standing military press and incline pec fly). I was tired, but I wanted it. 45 pounds would have been my best yet, and then it wasn't.
Why?
Not because I failed, but because I didn't look closely at the weights. After pushing myself through three sets of eight, I noticed I had 55 lb. weights instead of 45. Hmm... I wonder if I could have done it if I had known I was holding 55s. I think I probably could not have becuase I would have thought of the increase to 55 as "too much." But now I have a different frame of mind.
When you have that moment of clarity when you really understand the mental aspect of the sport, you really look at lifting in a different way. I hope I never lose that perspective.
