sorry to hear that happened to you.
Other competitors should take note. Many people believe that you can take as much potassium as you want and this is just not the case. All that potassium coupled with the fact that you were dehydrated just incerased the concentration of your potassium levels to ridiculous highs. Prevents the myocardial cells in the heart from depolarizing by hyperpolarizing them, can stop your heart... scary stuff. I believe a similar situation occurred with Mike Matarazzo about 10 years ago but I could be mistaken
Good thing they caught it in time.
I know we've had our differences but I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks Layne...
You're exactly right, and the reason I decided to write the article is for competitors to realize just easy it is to overstep that line. Recognize the signs and do the right thing...get yourself to emergency ASAP.
Most people only think about levels going too LOW, never thinking about them actually soaring HIGHER.
Be safe and good luck in your preps, brother.

Indeed, unfortunately there are so many myths surrounding the last week of contest prep that even seasoned competitors make mistakes. Potassium probably has more myths than any other mineral out there. Most anything can be dangerous though, if amounts are high enough. Have a speedy recovery.

LOL, even though I'm against steroid usage, steroids had nothing to do with what happened to Bob. In this case steroids might have actually helped Bob since they cause water retention intracellularly, they may have diluted his high potassium concentrations high enough that it kept his cells from hyperpolarizing. Am I saying steroids are safe? No, indeed not, but in this case they might have actually helped.
His condition was brought about due to hydration and electrolyte levels, not steroid usage.

Yeah i know what happened had no correlation with steroids per say but the mind frame were there health comes dead last did atribute to it, Diuritecs etc people who werent on roids would not be willing to take something as dangerous as this and what ever else he does.

PumpingUp-
You think natural guys don't use diuretics?
I find it hard to believe that you are that clueless as to what REALLY goes on behind the scenes.
I've trained many natural athletes over my time and I can honestly say that the overuse and abuse of everything under the sun that was NOT classified as a steroid was frightening....
I hardly think that's "natural" anyway...but thats another debate!!
Get with the program, man!!

Question Bob; so usually how many diuretic pills do you usually take the night before a show? Does it depend on how your body looks or do you usually intake a certain amount no matter what condition you are in?

I admire you for disseminating this sort of information which may save another bodybuilder's life. I used to think you were just one of bodybuilding's 'pretty boys' but I now know that you must have depth of character. It took balls for you and Brenda to write your articles. Thank goodness also you learned your lesson an easier way than Andreas Munzer or Mohammed Bennazia.

true, i've seen some guys at natural shows go as far as to give themselves laxatives and enemas the night before a show. To me that's just stupid and dangerous and it's not very sound theory to begin with. Muscle tissue is 70% water, if you deplete too much you are just going to come in flat. This changes for people that use steroids however as steroids cause alot of extracellular water retention which needs to be depleted... however for someone not taking illicit anabolics diuretics are not needed, neither is significant water depletion for that matter.
