First off, there are a lot of assertions in this article with zero citations. But citations wouldn't have mattered because the proof of real world results is overwhelming. I've followed NHE several times and never had any sort of problems or dysfunction. While on such a diet I have also managed to increase strength within short periods of time while getting ripped.

There are a lot of people out there who would disagree with much of what this article says simply because they have experienced great results from carb depleted diets.

But I dislike any sort of diet anyway.
I say follow your instinct.

Angry

Where did this guy get his information on low carb diets? I have use all the time for cutting they work great and you can even put on a little lbm while you do it. I would not use one for bulking because its just not effective. I wish people would stop bashing low carb diets they work for some people like myself that have a hard time with weight loss on a higher carb diet. People need to find what works for them. My review of this arcle is it just a lot of misiformation. How many people do 1.5 grams per pound of body wieght of protein when cutting? None! Almost everything I have read says 1gram per while cutting. Also it can be less when in ketotisis because it's know to have a protien sparing effect.

Do not listen to what this guy has to say!

I think that you folks are missing the point. It's an opinion article. Some are written to prove a point, others to share a point of view.

I think that it's safe to say that low carb diets do work, but that's not to say we can not question the validity of what has now become the invogue method of dieting. Just like any other method, it has it's pluses and minuses.

Great read

Maki, thanks for an very thought provoking article. I'm most intrigued by the theromdynamics part. I frequently cant resist the Macdonalds post work out carb up. Can you explain how this is hurting my current diet? i've seemed to level off after 5 weeks.

Quote:
the thermodynamics were true someone who had maintenance caloric intake of 2500 calories/day would get the same results eating 2000 calories of Burger King as someone eating 2000 calories of chicken, oatmeal, and flax.

In the Burger King case a person would lose muscle and gain fat. In the chicken and oatmeal case a person would build muscle and lose fat. Ever notice that you can consume far more calories and remain leaner when you bulk "clean" as opposed to just eating pizza and protein shakes.

Your body will partition nutrients and calories differently based on the food you eat. If someone ate 400 calories of Oatmeal 80% might get turned into glycogen and utilized in your muscle building efforts and only 20% gets stored as fat.

Now if someone ate a 400 calorie glazed donut only 30% might get turned into glycogen and 70% go to your fat stores, there is a huge difference. Now apply this concept to every food you eat and then build an entire diet around that food, If a person needed 3000 calories to bulk who builds more muscle and gains less fat the person who's body is using 80% of the calories they eat towards building muscle and storing only 20% or the person using 30% for building muscle of their 3000 and storing 70% as fat?

i just thought it was funny, first the author goes off on how you can't simplify the human body , then turns around and says the human body can only build or break down it can't do both.... i seriously doubt she has the biochemical or physiological background to make such rediculous assertions.
