The message may be vague and philosophical, but it teaches an important lesson in applying the fighter's mindset to obstacles faced in life. Especially in concert with Coach Sonnen's other articles, about martial arts or simply training, which often make reference to training past certain barriers; pain, respiratory response, mental barriers etc. This is about overcoming existential obstacles. The point is that being a fighter isn't only about fighting in the gym, or in the ring, its about pushing through the membrane in all your activities and becoming masterful at anything.
I read this once at a low point. My training had plateaued, my relationship was sinking, and my job was dragging me down. I remember it meaning a hell of a lot to me then, it gave me hope. I revitalized my training by changing routines, and I just got out of that relationship and revisited this article. It serves as a good reminder about who is really in charge in your life: you!
