The article states that bodybuilders don't need more protein than the average couch-potatoe to build muscles optimally.

That would contradict everything I've heard so far...

Quote:
There is no scientific evidence supporting the popular belief that athletes require massive amounts of protein. According to Dr. Suzanne Nelson Steen, head of the University of Washington Huskies Sports Nutrition Program, strength athletes require high carbohydrate and adequate glycogen stored in the muscle.

She points out that all high intensity, powerful muscle contractions (such as weight lifting) are fueled with carbohydrate. "Neither fat nor protein can be oxidized rapidly enough to meet the demands of high-intensity exercise. Adequate dietary carbohydrate must be consumed on a daily basis to restore glycogen levels." To build more muscles, you simply have to follow a good weight training program and eat a well balanced diet consistently.

Except for the "duh" points, that article seemed to be total BS. She says you don't need protein because carbs are what your body burns during hiintensity exercise. That's true, but completely misses the point. No one is suggesting that protein is consumed for fuel purposes. It's for RECOVERY. Your muscles are made of PROTEIN, so PROTEIN is what is used to build them up.

Does anybody rewiew these articles before they get posted on the main page? Misinformation like that shouldn't be appear on a site called Bodybuilding.com. Obviously there are many ways to train, and some disputable subjects, but protein ain't one of them.
