This is a good article for people just starting out. However, I think it is time that fitness falacies like the "fat burning zone" and lower abs are put to rest.
The fat burning zone is the result of some poor sole who did under stand reletivity.
at low intensity activity( about 60% MHR) you will be liberating 70-80% of your energy from fat. HOWEVER, the absolut rate of calorie expendature is so low that the contribution of fat is minimal. we are talking 70% of 13cals/ min which is about 9 to 10.
whe you get someone up around 80-85% of their MHR we are talking 40% of calories from energy. And the rate of calorie expendature is about 30, which is 12 calories from fat per minute.
So even though the RELETIVE amount of fat goes down, the total amout of fat burned is greater. Nto to mention the EPOC is greater as well. But in the end fat burning doesn't equat to fat LOSS. the only way to lose fat is to use more calories than you eat. So in that context it would make sence to work out at a higher intensity to burn off more calories total. Wouldn't it?
And lower abs. The rectus muscle is one big muscle. there are no fascial seperations, you can not stimulate half of it with out stimulating the other half. trunk flexion is trunk flexion. That would be like trinh to work a lower biceps...not possible.
