Great article from a true pro which makes me wonder a bit about my habbits...
Turned +40 now and always been doing lots of sports (running, martial arts, rugby, racket sports, MTB biking etc) joined a gym and started hitting weights about a year ago after some other sport opportunities faded away. I always had really easy building muscle.
ActIively coaching teens playing soccer so I get a lot of cardio and HIIT myself as well. Try to split around how many gym days I can get week by week. Working around big compound moves 3 days a week and if I get the luxury of a 4th (or even a 5th) day I hit something lagging or just mix things up.
I started my squat training by (my idea) building up a solid core doing a hard core traininng (giant setting 3x5 excs to failure twice a week) + building up the squat weight by super setting squats with calves like GVT 10 x 10 a little heavier than my body weight (80 vs appr. almost 70 kg) once a week. Now Ive started 3x15 100 kg (150% my body weight) squats (not SS-ing). Its very hard, I?m exhausted after each set, which I love) now aiming builing it up to 3x20 100kg before adding a bit more weight).
I never used a belt though and my idea has been that lifting clean will help adding more core stabillity. I?m also not using any straps for chins or rows for the same reason (building grip strenght and under arms) It feels right doing what im doing.
Should i start using a belt???
P.S. By the way its no idea asking my dedicated PT at the gym since the lady
in question hasnt got a clue. When I joined and asked her to suggest a split, she, believe it or not, thought split was doing weights one day and cardio another, never heard of doing different body parts on different days... LOL
