Get a neutered female shih tzu and they will get along fine. If you get two males there will be problems somewhere down the line. ONe dog always has to be alpha.

Get a miniature Dachshund (female or male is inconsequential with these dogs as long as you get them fixed early)
I got one for my wife on her last bday and they are great dogs. They get along with everyone and I have yet to sea her be agressive with any other dogs. On the contrary she gets along with every dog she has met thus far.

i have a shelti-poo and he is seriously the best dog I could have ever asked. for hes going on 10 years old but is still just as playful and loving as when he was a puppy. He is also well behaved and very obedient, but still has a hilarious personality of his own. If youre looking for a small dog, I would highly recommend a shelti-poo.

I'd get another small dog. Schnauzers are VERY good companions for other small breeds, although if you get a male make sure its neutered for better behavior and interaction. I have two miniature schnauzers and I love them.
If you want to get them a bigger dog, I'd suggest a medium breed, like a border collie or a australian shepherd.
Don't get a dog that would be too rough with the little one. My german shepherd plays rough with my miniature schnauzer (male), but they've been together for over 6 years, and the bigger dog knows how to play without hurting the playmate. Not all dogs are like this.
When you get a dog, ask one of the employees of the shelter or store to let you spend some time with it in a small room before making your decision. Look for traits such as calm, friendly introductory behavior, low aggression, etc. Don't get a dog that growls if you try to pet it, barks at others that accompany you, or hesitates letting you pet it.
Once you pick a dog, don't rush the introduction of it to your current dog. In other words, dont put them face-to-face off the bat and expect them to pals. Distance them, let them look eachother down from that distance, and if they try to move toward eachother, let them do so slowly so they can smell eachother out. After this, separate them again for a little while. Let the new dog roam the house without the former dog in the perimeter, so it can independently get used to its new surroundings.
Gradually let the two dogs spend time with eachother. About a day or so after you get the new dog, if they get along, let them both just roam around and eventually they will get along and get used to each other. If they don't get along after a couple of days, take the new dog back and try another. You dont want two fighting dogs in the same household for a long duration of time; it never works out.
As for male or female, I'd get a female for a higher chance that they'd get along. BUt it isn't fair to assume another male would fight with yours. I'd just look at what's there and determine which dog itself would get along best with yours.
Good luck!

Definitely a female. I don't think the breed really matters. Get them something they would like, but make sure it's female.....

I'd say pomeranian (can be fiesty), miniature poodle, or another shi-tzu.
Good luck!

The best bet is to get a female. There is a higher tendency for dogs of the same sex to want to fight. I'd look into getting a small dog from a shelter or rescue. There are already too many BYBs and the only way to put them out of business is not to do business with them.

It's a designer mutt. Why support people who are ruining perfectly fine breeds?

dude definitely get another shih tzu. I have 3, 1 male 2 female and they all get along fine. Either male or female will be fine. Actually one of my females is the "alpha" dog you could say. Plus your mom will really enjoy a female shih tzu.. extremely friendly dogs.

And female dogs tend to be closer with family members.

Wrong. In many cases, my male schnauzer is far more thrilled by being with family than my female.

It's a female and it's very close to the family but before her we had a male who was very close and loyal. Before I was around he was my parents' kid and he acted like it.

Seriously. Thousand dollar "cockapoos," "labradoodles," and "puggles" are no more than mixed breeds. A fool and his money ...
Overpriced dogs bred by morons. I'd stay clear. Breeds are getting ruined as it is by backyard breeders, puppy mills, and the show ring.

You forgot pikachus (pikanese + chuwawa) and cockadoodles (cocker spaniel + poodle).
