This is the world's second 7 star hotel, the first is in Burj-Al-Arab in Dubai

There is lots of growth in India, China and SE Asian countires. Growth in Pakistan at present is way off those countries (but still quite strong, around 5-6% and with a lot of US aid).

Anyway, a 7* hotel is more aimed at tourism, which understandably in Pakistan is not a big export. I think infrastructure spend would be a lot more sensible at this stage in its development.

When push comes to shove, whether pakistan is a growing economy or not, its a **** hole, putting that hotel in it is band aid for a bullet wound, if you get a piece of **** and put a bow around it, its still a piece of ****.....the bow aint gonna change anything.

As with this hotel, it isnt gonna do anything special, wont dramaticlaly increase tourism in pakistan or that part of pakistan.....why would it, people would only be staying in the hotel and would leave the hotel to do stuff, problem is......theres f uck all to do in islamabad.

UPDATE : you see the 2 building with the hotel ? one of them is an apartment complex, football star David Beckham has purchased an apartment in the top story of that APT. Complex. ( read this in the paper, I will find a link for this too)

Well, the one thing that strikes me is that noone has mentioned the disparities in these Asian countries. India and China, for example, are full of rich moguls and this is only expanding - China is getting 4m new mobile phone customers/month to give you an idea of the growth. However, you still have absolute kips in these places.

I think this is just a continuation of the policy of letting the rich get richer in these countries and hope it rubs off.

Personally, I see it as an obvious terrorist target.

NO. Your wrong, from what I read this Hotel is right beside the Diplomatic Encave, where the U.S Embassy resides. The extremists in Pakistan were not able to blow that little embassy up in the last 55 years, you think they will be able to blow this huge building apart ?

Aside from grammatical superiority, I think it would be a terrorist target because of several factors:
1. Most tourists to a 7 star hotel in a Muslim country will be rich westerners or rich easterners. Either way, this materialism is seen with disdain and the symbolism of a 7 star hotel is the embodiment of western materialism.
2. I agree they probably couldn't destroy the whole building, but the point of terrorism is to deter a way of life and obstruct normality. Attacking a rich hotel in a country strewn with poverty is an obtuse way of saying "**** off" to the West.
3. Even so, I qualified my remarks by saying "I think". A lot of places are terrorist targets but that's no reason to suggest that they should shut down or be overly worried. However, I do think it will cross a few minds and given the cell structure of terrorism nowadays anything is possible.

I think the Burj al Arab is in a different position because it is an attempt to diversify the economy towards tourism for a post-oil middle east. This appears to be self aggrandisement.
